Animal Abuse

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

I am writing to encourage a larger response to the alleged abuse allegations. I am disappointed with this county's care for our four-legged friends. Just because they are animals does not mean they don't feel fear, pain, neglect and loneliness.

I have volunteered at the shelter several times and have recognized a long-time need for more space and more helping hands. Our irresponsibility in breeding and taking proper care of these animals that lands them in the shelter in the first place is sad enough. To hear of the continued suffering from the very hands that are supposed to help these animals is an outrage. Allowing second chances when there are documented cases of abuse should not be granted.

I hope that our community would take a better stand against animal cruelty and not let this issue slide. Those who are members and give their money or those who volunteer and give their time at the shelter, do so in hopes to better the lives of these animals. I don't want to wonder about whether or not the abuse I hope to save them from is happening at the very place I support and from the very person I have called to report neglect and signs of abuse!

I encourage members of the community to first give better support to the shelter that so desperately needs it, but also to voice concern for the continued employment of our current animal control officer. Animal abuse can not be tolerated in any form, not only because it is wrong but because behavior like that will most likely be directed into other outlets.

Stopping animal cruelty is actually helping to stop violence in general.
