Editor, Times-Union:
Watching political headlines over the past few months, many of us have been left with one overriding question: When are clear-thinking Americans like ourselves going to starting speaking up for the country’s general welfare at a time when so many of us are downright uncomfortable - and at times embarrassed or even ashamed - by the words and actions of the country’s current presidential administration?
The fact of the matter is that it’s time for this sort of a conversation, previously expressed in the privacy of one’s kitchen or car, to come to the forefront in communities from coast to coast before the damage that’s currently being inflicted on almost an hourly basis by the federal government reaches a point – without exaggerating – of no return regarding our national self-image and linkage with long-term allies like Canada, Greenland and several European countries with whom we’ve stood shoulder-to-shoulder since World War II. And what we’re seeing domestically with regard to federal troops on the streets of Minneapolis, Chicago and elsewhere is, frankly, disgraceful.
Bottom line, there’s nothing here I couldn’t say – and haven’t said- directly in private to personal friends, some of whom are still devout MAGA supporters and will undoubtedly remain so going forward. It’s just time for people to start speaking up on behalf of our precious homeland regardless of how many of their friends and neighbors won’t want to hear it. And maybe, possibly, some of them will begin listening.
