ROCHESTER - Alpheus C. Snyder, 98, of 9706 N. CR 775E, Losantivlle, and formerly of Argos, died at 5:24 a.m. Feb. 9, 2010, in Bradenton, Fla.
He was born Dec. 24, 1911, in Tippecanoe, to Ross L. and Vivian Rohrabaugh Snyder. His wife, Mary Snyder, preceded him in death. On Oct. 4, 1987, he married Mildred Jordan, who survives.
He was a 1930 Argos High School graduate. In 1937, he began working at the U.S. Post Office, Argos, as a town mail carrier and maintained that position until his retirement with 33 years of service. He farmed until retirement in 1980, after nearly 69 years. He received the Argos High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame Award in 1991. He was a member of Argos United Methodist Church since 1958; a charter member of Argos Lions Club; a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers; and a member of Bradenton Shuffleboard Club for 50 years, where he served as president, vice president and treasurer. While wintering in Florida for nearly 22 years, he attended Palmetto Presbyterian Church.
Also surviving are a daughter, Jo Snyder (and spouse Richard) Schaden, Tallahassee, Fla.; a son, Marvin (and spouse Nyla) Snyder, Argos; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two grandsons; three sisters; a stepdaughter; and a stepson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church, Argos, with the Revs. Kenneth Walker and Bob Flannery officiating.
Calling is from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.
