Her life was a beautiful reflection of love, faith, family and devotion to others. She leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories, countless lives touched and a family whose love for her will endure forever.
Born on Sept. 8, 1933, in Dayton, Ohio, to Orville and Beulah Foust, Alice was the sixth of their eight children. In 1951, she moved to North Manchester, Indiana, to attend Manchester College. It was there that she met the love of her life, Rex Schilling. They were united in marriage on Aug. 14, 1955, and shared 65 wonderful years together until Rex’s passing in 2020. Their marriage was a beautiful partnership built on faith, love, commitment and family.
Together, Alice and Rex built a life on their farm in Claypool, where they raised their three children, dairy cows and corn. Their home was filled with laughter, games, family traditions, and memories that will be treasured for generations. Alice’s family was her greatest blessing, and she devoted her life to loving and supporting them.
Alice also found great purpose and joy in her career as an elementary school teacher. She began teaching third grade at Claypool Elementary in 1967 and continued for 27 years, including 22 years teaching fifth grade at Silver Lake Elementary. She was a beloved educator who made a lasting difference in the lives of her students. Her patience, kindness, and dedication left an impression that extended far beyond the classroom.
In her free time, Alice enjoyed traveling with Rex, watching college sports, antiquing, sewing, and other crafts. She was an active member of Center United Methodist Church in Silver Lake teaching Sunday School and serving on several committees throughout her 65-year membership. She was an avid fan of the Warsaw Tigers; she and Rex were fixtures at basketball games for many years. She appreciated life’s simple pleasures and found happiness in every moment spent with family and friends.
Alice treasured her 10 grandchildren, who brought immeasurable joy to her life. She was their most devoted supporter and fan. She faithfully attended their school and sporting events, celebrating their accomplishments along the way. Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart, and she delighted in watching them grow and build successful lives of their own.
Alice is survived by her three children: Kathee (Mike) Reed, Kim (Steve) Kesler, and Tom (Kelly) Schilling; her brother, Jim (Sonya) Foust; and her sister, Rachel Foust, 10 cherished grandchildren: Lara (Brian) Barbour, Brooks (Jessica) Reed, Rob (Bethany) Kesler, Ross (Kristin) Kesler, Kara (Wes) Whisler, Kyla Kesler, Kandi (Shane) Eagan, Rhett (Zosia) Kesler, Sam Schilling and Kate Schilling.
