AKRON - Alfred F. Mathiesen, 95, formerly of Akron, died at 7:25 a.m. March 18, 2007, in Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester, where he resided.
He was born Aug. 13, 1911, in Edgar, Wis., to Charles and Minnie Schroeder Mathiesen. On June 6, 1942, in Athens, he married Eva Louise Rowe, who died Nov. 15, 2005.
A school teacher for 38 years, he taught industrial arts and agriculture at Akron High School for many years and taught fifth grade at W.C. Mills Elementary, Wabash. He was a World War II Navy veteran, teaching riveting class on Navy Pier. He was a member of Akron United Methodist Church; Masonic Lodge, Rochester; and Retired Teachers Association. He earned a bachelor's degree in River Falls, Wis., and earned a master's degree from Purdue University. He loved gardening and woodworking and was very proud of his former students.
Surviving are a sister, Irene Habeck, Manitowac, Wis.; three nieces; and three nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ella Singelman and Alma Marquardt, and two brothers, Raymond and Leonard Mathiesen.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron, with the Rev. Don Dexheimer officiating. Burial will be in Athens Cemetery.
Calling is from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
