Alcohol Board Tables Warsaw Seafood Permit Renewal After No One Shows For Hearing

Posted
Two restaurants’ alcohol permits were up for renewal Thursday before the Alcoholic Beverage Board of Kosciusko County with violations, but one had to be tabled for a month when a representative failed to appear.

The beer, wine and liquor restaurant permit for Arrow Um, 937 N. Detroit St., Warsaw, doing business as Warsaw Seafood, had a violation dating back to June 17, 2021, according to excise officer April Tackett. When she asked if anyone was present to represent the business, no one responded so the hearing was tabled until the 1 p.m. May 5 meeting.

The other renewal with a violation was for a beer, wine and liquor restaurant permit for R.P. Watters Corp., 204 S. Buffalo St., Warsaw, doing business as Rex’s Rendezvous.

In explaining the violation, Robin Watters, president of the company, said, “Had a couple come in. My daughter checked their IDs. She mistakenly thought that it was the 30th, it was the 29th. She wished the girl a happy birthday, asked her if she could buy her a birthday drink. She said ‘no.’ Apparently, they sat them up a drink and that’s what happened. She was one day off from the day that she would be 21.”

Tackett said the violation report “shows that the violation was on Nov. 29. This shows the birthday (of the woman) as 8/11 of 2001.”

Watters said his daughter said the ID showed the birthdate as Nov. 30.

Elim Smith, Board president, asked, “So how many days difference was it?”

Tackett said it was “August to November.”

Watters said he was there but in the basement doing book work.

Board member Alan Alderfer asked what kind of training did his daughter have. Watters said his daughter has been in the industry for eight years. She ran Howl at the Moon in Indianapolis, then managed Howl at the Moon in Louisville, Ky., and has been back at Rex’s Rendezvous for the last two years. Watters said she has corporate training, as well as his.

Tackett pointed out that the end of the violation report showed that Rex’s has “successfully passed this program 11 times to one time failure.”

Watters said he tries to be on his people and be firm with them. Smith said the Board knows that.

The fine was $1,000 for the restaurant and $250 for the bartender, Watters said.

Board member Dan Woods made a motion to approve Rex’s Rendezvous’ permit renewal, Alderfer seconded it and the motion was passed 4-0. The county board is a recommending body to the state alcohol commission.
