Aging Well: These Twins Are Still Close After 90 YearsEvelyn Adams and Everett Tom came into this world 90 years ago as “quite a surprise.”
Their mother gave birth to them at a hospital in Mishawaka on July 23, 1928. She hadn’t known until that day that she was carrying twins, said Melissa Gerber, Everett’s daughter.
Everett arrived first at 4 pounds and Evelyn came 3 minutes later, weighing in at 3½ pounds.
The twins grew up very close to one another and still talk every day, Gerber said. They are both “very healthy, physically and mentally.”
Evelyn married Charles Adams on Nov. 25, 1948, and they were blessed with 67 years of marriage before Charles died on Jan. 9, 2015. They had three daughters: Diane Walker (deceased), Linda (Mike) Tucker and Nancy (Allen) Robinson. She has three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Evelyn was a secretary for the Beaver Dam school and was a clerk for the Kosciusko County government offices. She enjoys gardening, sewing and boat rides.
Everett married Marie Eby on Dec. 6, 1953; they have been married for 64 years. They had two sons and three daughters: Kip Tom (Marcia McNagny), Kevin Tom (deceased), Melinda (Russ) Woda, Melissa (Ray) Gerber and Melodie (Scott) Thompson. They have 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Everett has farmed his whole life and continues today with about 30 head of cattle. He enjoys working with his cows, keeping the yards mowed and spending time with his family.
Their families will be celebrating their birthdays together at a party Sunday.
“We have been blessed having them with us for so long,” Gerber said in an email. “I told them both to plan on another party in 10 years!”
