PIERCETON - Affra Lenwell, 92, died at 9:55 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008, in Grace Village, Winona Lake, where she resided.

She was born March 8, 1916, in Salem, to Cecil and Leona Grace Woods Wade. On June 4, 1939, in Cincinnati, Ohio, she married Max Lenwell, who died April 15, 2004.

She earned a bachelor's degree in education from Indiana University in 1939. Formerly of Pierceton, she taught English, Latin and physical education at Pierceton High School and Whitko School Corp. for 39 years. She was a member of United Methodist Church, Pierceton; United Methodist Women; and Mother's Study Club, Pierceton. She was a sponsor for Future Teachers of America.

Surviving are three daughters: Marcia Dierks, Sidney; Kathy (and spouse Steven) Dierks, Liberty Mills; and Cheryl (and spouse Clint) Pletcher, Carmel; six grandchildren: Julie (and spouse Michael) Oaks, Sidney; Eric (and spouse Amy) Dierks-Zimmerman, Minnesota; Todd (and spouse Melissa) Dierks, North Manchester; Tara (and spouse David) Helms, Galveston; Tisha Pletcher (and spouse Joseph Stephens) Louisville, Ky.; and Kristin (and spouse Joe) Cosgrove, Oceanside, Calif.; 11 great-grandchildren; Brandon and Hanna Oaks; Kaitlyn, Conner, Sarrah, Lindsey and Heath Dierks; Ross, Wyatt and John Helms; and Harper Pletcher Stephens; a sister, Beverly Heflin-Villa Grove, Ill.; and her caregiver, Patty Walters, Sidney.

A celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Pierceton United Methodist Church with Pastor Diana Siegel officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.

Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Pierceton.
