I have to ask you, Jennifer Bell, do you know of any employee who was fired from a business in Kosciusko County for not being able to make it to work? I am fairly sure the answer was zero.
Where I work, probably half of our morning shift called saying they could not make it. The result, none of them did not even get a warning! If your 18-year-old son or daughter was told to make it to work or be fired, then they're in the wrong business.
Second of all, you do not need to try to explain to me what the government officials in Kosciusko County are supposed to do. If you look on the county commissioners webpage (http://www.kcgov.com/o_index.asp?hdnselectedID=104), you will see nothing about how they are supposed to tell people to not be out on the roads during a blizzard. Also, the only ethical things they have to do is make sure they are following the law and make sure they spend our tax dollars on the county. As long as they are not spending tax dollars on luxuries and following all the laws, the commissioners are acting ethically.
However, if you're interested in holding everyone's hand; first of all, you're not holding mine. Second, the next time they are calling for a chance of snow showers, the county should declare a total snow emergency and say that no one except highway department and emergency vehicles are on the road. If you are not one of those, you will get a ticket. How does that sound, Ms. Bell? Would anyone keep driving across a broken bridge just because the county has not put up signs saying the bridge is out?
Ms. Bell, the purpose of government is not conformity and guidance. The fundamental purpose of government is the protection of our natural rights. Government cannot restrict our natural rights, nor can they limit one individual's rights because society is against a choice for moral, political or religious reasons. As Thomas Jefferson has said, "The policy of the American government is to leave their citizens free, neither restraining nor aiding them in their pursuits."
Hopefully, you will be truthful and participate in county government, by attending meetings and seeing how the county operates. I hope that you will not bother them every meeting by asking them why they did not declare a snow emergency every meeting. It is counter-productive, and it has been answered many times. If you want to run in the next election - feel free. Good luck and if you lose, accept gracefully.
Political participation is a sign of a healthy republic. I believe the county commissioners are doing an outstanding job and their handling during the blizzard was exemplary, they hoped that the residents of Kosciusko County would engage in safety and common sense in traveling during the blizzard.
One last thing - President Obama lied, Mr. Shirey.
