7 Departments Respond To Pierceton FirePIERCETON – Fire at an old farmhouse in Pierceton kept seven fire departments busy for several hours Monday.
Everyone at home at 7206 E. CR 150N, Pierceton, at the time of the fire escaped without injury, Pierceton Fire Chief Gordon Baker said. The home is owned and occupied by Kevin and Nicky Slone.
The call came in Monday at 9:54 a.m. Along with Pierceton Fire Department, responding were fire departments from North Webster, Leesburg, Winona Lake, Sidney, Larwill and Warsaw; the American Red Cross, Lutheran EMS, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office, Kosciusko REMC “dropped lines as necessary” and “our great dispatchers,” Baker stated.
He said he got back from the fire around 3 p.m. It took 1-1/2 to 2 hours to “truly bring the fire under control,” Baker said. The remaining time was spent making sure the fire was out and to be sure it would not rekindle.
“There was a lot of fire. It was a big old farmhouse,” he said.
The fire remains under investigation, but Baker said it appears to be accidental. It started in an interior room on the first floor, but quickly spread to the second.
“It’s an old farmhouse with lots of contents and concealed space inside,” Baker said. It had a balloon-frame construction, which gave the fire lots of places to go, he said. “It spread quickly from the first floor.”
He estimated the damage to the structure was $100,000.
