If there is a contested race within a party, the party will hold a convention to make a selection from those candidates. If there is a contested race between the parties, the town will have an election in November. Some towns won’t have an election at all because there is only one candidate for each open seat.

The primary for the city of Warsaw, Syracuse and Winona Lake is Tuesday, May 2, though Warsaw has no contested races so it does not have an election. In Winona Lake, the sole race in the primary is for clerk-treasurer between Heather James and incumbent Laurie Renier; while Syracuse has a clerk-treasurer race between incumbent Virginia Cazier and Larry Spiegel and a three-way race for town board Ward 4 seat.

Larry Martindale resigned from the Syracuse Council and a Republican caucus was held Feb. 7 to replace him on the board for the remainder of 2023. Nathan Scherer won the caucus, but is up against David Rosenberry and Brian Woody - whom also ran for office in the caucus - again in the primary.
