28 Students Featured In Lilly Center For Lakes & Streams Art ContestWINONA LAKE – The Lilly Center for Lakes & Streams announced 28 winners and honorable mentions in its 11th annual art contest.

Altogether, 254 young people contributed artwork, ranging from fourth to 12th grade and spanning almost every school district across Kosciusko County, according to a news release from the center.

The 2018-19 contest theme was Lake and Stream Habitats. The students’ work displayed a variety of perspectives, mediums and subjects. Some students used watercolor, others used pencil or acrylic paint.

The pieces were first placed in categories by age group. The six or seven highest-ranking pieces from each category were then taken to the art department at Grace College. There, the professors and students chose a winner and the runners-up for each age group. These will then be published in a calendar for 2020.

Winning pieces from the 2018-19 contest will be available for viewing at Latte Lounge in downtown Warsaw through Friday; Mutual Bank in Warsaw and Syracuse May 6-10; at the Lilly Center in the Dr. Dane A. Miller Science Complex May 13-22; and at the Lakes Festival May 24-26. Select pieces will also be displayed in the Warsaw Alley, located in downtown Warsaw, in May.

The art contest is one of four Lilly Center programs that focus on K-12 education. The others include Lake Adventure Day, a two-day field trip to a local lake, and Classroom Lake Experience, a program that brings aquariums of fish to classrooms for the duration of a school year. The Lilly Center also offers an aquatic petting zoo, an interactive program that allows students to directly interact with native underwater animals.

The 2018-19 contest was sponsored by City of Warsaw Stormwater Utility, Clearwater Car Wash, The Dekko Foundation, Didage/Surgical Power, Lilly Center, Kay Young – Todd Realty, Kosciusko Community Hospital, Medtronic Inc., MutualBank, The Papers Inc., The Watershed Foundation and Zimmer Biomet.
