WINONA LAKE – Twenty-one boats participated in the cardboard regatta race during Canal Days Saturday, drawing a crowd to watch.
Eric Lane, co-founder and executive director of Fellowship Missions, said there were so many youth that were involved this year, including 26 Edgewood Middle School students who made up eight teams.
One of the boats was reraced. The Banoe was raced by Violet Hill in the youth category and then by her brother Luke Hill in the adult category.
The fastest time for the kids single category went to the SS Papa 2, made up of teammates Landon and Colton Reep. The fastest time for the youth single category went to Banoe, with paddler Luke Hill, at 5:15. The fastest youth team and fastest overall time was SS Blackbeard - made up of Jarvish Sriran and Lincoln Rak paddling with teammates Holden Owens and Samuel Weaver watching - with a time of 3:18. The fastest time for the adult category was Aw Shucks, made up of teammates Ellis Hernandez and Deborah Kerr, with a time of 8:48. The best costume went to Up, made up of teammates Brielle Petterson, Shanelle Brown and Alina Cullers; and the SS Winkleton, made up of teammates Ellie Macke, Nor Bean and Cora Demange.
The Best of Show with 139 tickets went to the SS Blackbeard.
Lane said this is the ninth year for the partnership with Canal Days and Fellowship Missions in raising money through the cardboard regatta race. Donations and money raised through the Best of Show went to Fellowship Missions.
It helps brings awareness to Fellowship Missions and what the organization does.
Canal Days also allows for a fun event for people to go to and doing some things in the community, he said.
