NORTH WEBSTER – Through an abundance of caution for the community due to the COVID virus, the North Webster Community Center Board of Directors determined the annual “Keep the Lights on Auction” must be cancelled for 2020.
After much soul searching and discussion the motion was passed with no board member being happy about the decision but each one knowing it was the right thing to do for the safety of the community the facility serves, according to a news release from the board.
Funding was an issue that was considered since NWCC relies on donations since tax dollars do not fund the operations. The board felt the bigger issues included: The logic of trying to sell tickets to the event at Ace Hardware and Neighborhood Fresh (as has always been done) with face masks on as required by the governor’s order. The inability of some businesses, who have always been great supporters, to contribute at their usual level. Prior generous live and silent auction participants that may not be able to support the event on an in-person or virtual platform. In the end, the most compelling reason was that NWCC did not want to be responsible for the possible further spread of the virus, the release states.
The Board of Directors of the North Webster Community Center are working on fundraising programs that will be announced in the near future with the hope that the enthusiasm for NWCC will continue while we work through the issues of 2020. The Board looks forward to the 2021 Live and Silent Auction when “we can once again gather, share a meal, enjoy each other’s company safely and celebrate the great benefits of the North Webster Community Center and the many supporters,” the release states.
