About 150 women participated in the Women Build event Thursday at Warsaw Community Church.
Ben Logan, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Kosciusko County, said the women came from the community and area businesses. Team leaders recruited coworkers, family and friends.
The teams were also raising money to build the house. Logan said the goal was $150,000 and as of Thursday, about $112,000 had been raised.
The house will be a 100% Women Build. Women Build is pretty common in Habitat and Kosciusko County’s took Johnson County’s model and tweeked it, Logan said.
During the Women Build event, the women worked in two shifts for a total of two hours to build the frame for a Habitat home on Hepler Drive in Warsaw, on a lot donated by Bowen Health last fall. By the end of the two hours, Logan said the frame was going to be standing in the WCC parking lot.
Logan said the frame was being built in sections and then the sections wil be stood up and put together enough to be walked through and for volunteers to sign the frame.
Normally, there’s 25 people per shift during a panel build, but on Thursday, they had 70-80 people per shift, so Logan thought the process was going to go pretty quickly.
Metzger Trucking Co will then take the sections to the Hepler Drive site.
The first volunteers will be on the building site on Wednesday and Logan said there are 25 to 30 teams that will building through Thanksgiving, he said. Plumbing and excavation will be contracted out but the Women Build teams will work on framing, windows and siding.
So far this year, Habitat has closed on two houses - one in Mentone and one in Warsaw. They have two active projects, including the house on Hepler Drive.
“People need housing. Simple as that,” Logan said. People see Habitat as an outlet and are volunteering and donating.
