One teenager is dead and another has been detained on a preliminary charge of reckless homicide after a shooting Monday night.
According to a news release from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office, shortly after 8 p.m. Monday, March 23, deputies responded to a report of a shooting at the Suburban Acres Mobile Home Park. Upon arrival, officers found a 15-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following initial interviews with several juveniles who were present at the residence at the time of the incident, the release states, another 15-year-old was detained on a preliminary charge of reckless homicide.
During the investigation, authorities recovered a handgun at the scene that was determined to have been reported stolen.
A statement from Warsaw Community Schools says, “Warsaw Community Schools is deeply saddened by the loss of one of our high school students. This is a difficult time for our school community, and our thoughts are with the student’s family and friends.”
WCS says that counseling staff is on site and they extend their thanks to Bowen Health for providing additional staff to support students and staff during this time.
“At this time, we are working with local authorities and ask that everyone respect the family’s privacy,” the WCS release says.
The case remains under active investigation. No more information will be released at this time, the release from the KCSO said.
The KCSO was assisted at the scene by the Warsaw Police Department and the Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office.
