With the 2021 fall semester quickly approaching, the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference announced its preseason poll and “Athletes to Watch” listing for volleyball on Wednesday.

The Grace men’s and women’s cross country teams begin the 2021 season with appearances in their respective national polls.

The Manchester University football team will return to the gridiron next week against the Trine University Thunder. With the 2021 football season fast approaching, the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference announced its preseason poll and “Athletes to Watch” listing on Thursday morning.

The Grace women’s tennis team enters the 2021-22 season on the heals of another stellar campaign. Despite the setbacks and delays caused by COVID, the Lancers tied a school record with 14 wins a year ago and finished third in the Crossroads League for the third straight year. Coach Marcus Moore was voted the NCCAA National Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the season.

Warsaw (1-0) at Michigan City (1-0); Northfield (0-1) at Tippecanoe Valley (1-0); Triton (1-0) at LaVille (1-0); Wawasee (0-1) at West Noble (0-1); Whitko (0-1) at Peru (0-1)

Coming off a NCCCA National Championship, a Sweet 16 finish in the NAIA, and a school record for wins in a season, the Lancer men’s tennis team has a tall order in front of them if they want to show improvement in 2021-22. However, with six of their top seven players returning—including three All-Crossroads League honorees—Coach Andy Lewis and the Lancers appear to have the ingredients of another stellar campaign. “If we continue to compete as a team and play for each other, I believe we can be even better this year,” said Lewis.

The Warsaw Tigers girls’ soccer side opened Northern Lakes Conference action at the Tiger Soccer Complex in dominating fashion with a 3-1 win over the Plymouth Rockies Tuesday night. The only thing more stifling than the near-100-degree heat index temperature on the pitch was the Tiger defensive front.

“Keep climbing” could be the rallying cry for the women’s cross country program in 2021. They took significant steps a year ago, receiving votes in the NAIA polls for the first time in school history and qualifying two individuals for the NAIA championships for the first time since 1985.

On what was an exceptionally hot day for a run, the Warsaw girls cross country team finished in first place of the 29th annual Warsaw Cross Country Classic Tuesday. On the boys side, Warsaw finished in second, behind winners Columbia City.

Manchester football coach Alyx Brandewie says “going into that room and telling our players that they’re not going to be able to play is one of the tougher things I’ve ever had to do.” Addressing the situation Tuesday evening, Brandewie confirmed Monday’s news that the Squires’ high school football game Friday at Bluffton is canceled.

Football is a sport of over-reaction. The bad seems unbearably bad and the good is cause for unsquashable rejoicing and celebration. And there is a cautionary tale to be told there for both sides it.

Novotny earns league Defender of the Week award

Growth. Development. Maturation. The definition of any of those words is what Coach Jake Poyner hopes describes his men’s cross country squad. After being one of the youngest teams mentioned in the NAIA polls a year ago, the goal for 2021 is to show continued improvement and establish a place among the elite teams in country.

The Warsaw Tigers captured the most anticipated season opener in years Friday night at Fisher Field with a convincing 49-23 victory, using a dominating rushing attack (520 yards) to mow the Dublin Coffman Shamrocks, a perennial Columbus, Ohio-area playoff qualifier. Dublin Coffman, in an Ohio enrollment class equivalent to an Indiana Class 7A if the Hoosier state had 11 million people, marched into Warsaw with their preseason No. 14 ranking. Though the storied program struck paydirt on their first play, it was the Warsaw Tigers who outscored the Shamrocks 49-16 thereafter.

The Tippecanoe Valley Vikings added to the school’s football history in a big way Friday night, and also honored the memory of a deceased school mate. In a 42-7 season-opening win over the host Wawasee Warriors, Valley used its depth, experience and running game to dominate the time of possession and notch the 300th win in program history.

You can hear blaring music from almost a mile away. You can smell the popcorn popping and the hot dogs grilling from the moment you enter the front gate. Once you get to your seat, all you can see is a sea of blue. It can only mean one thing: Triton football is back. The game itself wasn’t as pretty as the sights and sounds, but after the result, Trojan fans likely could care less.

Tim Tebow, neither the first nor last Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback to struggle in the NFL, has been cut again by a coach/coach’s friend doing him a solid. He turned 34-years old a few days before the Jacksonville Jaguars, now coached by his former college coach at Florida (Urban Meyer), released him.

The 2021 campaign for Grace’s volleyball team began in perfect fashion on Friday. The Lady Lancers won twice at the season-opening tournament at Warner University (Fla.), beating Truett McConnell 3-0 and Warner 3-1.
