Manchester University sophomore linebacker Jamaal Hubbard has been tabbed as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.

Six area football teams have their beginning paths set for the second season, the IHSAA Sectionals beginning Friday October 22 for classes 1A-4A, and a handful of Class 5A squads. Each school’s head coach will tell, in different words, the media and their own gridders the best approach toward success in the second season is to go 1-0 each week.

The second-ranked Spartans and the NLC co-champion Tigers ended regulation tied at one goal apiece and carried their one-all tie through two 7-minute overtime periods before two rounds of five-player one-on-one shootouts. Homestead hoisted the sectional title trophy netting eight of their ten shots to Warsaw’s seven makes, among ten attempts for each side after 94 physical minutes of fast-paced, ultra-physical soccer.

Different year. Same result. For the 11th consecutive season, Warsaw’s boys and girls cross country teams both won sectional titles Saturday.

Listed on Warsaw’s football roster as 5-foot-6 and 140 pounds, Jayce Sawyer was far from being the biggest player on the Fisher Field turf Friday night. The junior fullback, however, played much larger than his stature and turned in a monster performance as the Tigers stayed unbeaten in Northern Lakes Conference play with a 42-24 win over the visiting NorthWood Panthers.

Tippecanoe Valley’s special season continued on Friday night, as the Vikings rolled past Wabash to the tune of a 54-0 victory to improve to 8-0 on the season.

I had a recent phone conversation with someone, and throughout the conversation I couldn’t stop asking myself - in fact he and I could not stop asking the rhetorical question to each other – what’s wrong with the disparity of competitiveness among all high school sports?

Lakeland Christian boys soccer dropped its opening match of the sectional tournament to Wabash Wednesday, falling 5-0. The Cougars finish their season with a 5-10 record.

The Warsaw Tigers struck early and often in their 9-0 Class 3A Sectional 7 semifinal victory over the Fort Wayne Wayne Generals to set up a rematch between Warsaw’s and the Homestead Spartans.

Grace’s volleyball team could not maintain its lead late in each set, falling 3-0 to St. Francis on Wednesday.

Elkhart piled up three goals over a span of less than 14 first-half minutes, and Warsaw was never able to crawl out from under the barrage during a 3-0 Goshen Sectional semifinal loss to the Lions in a showdown of state-ranked Class 3A boys soccer teams Wednesday night. It wasn’t so much the bunching of goals, but how they came about that was bothersome to second-year Tiger coach Ryan Burgher.

Tippecanoe Valley’s Unified flag football team had a fun-filled, action-packed Saturday. The Vikings toppled Carroll 20-19 in the quarterfinals, convincingly defeated Homestead 38-12 in the semifinals, then held on to capture the sectional title 22-20 over Three Rivers Conference foe, the Manchester Squires.

Seniors Andrew Kibler and Jalen Masden earned Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors, the league announced on Monday October 4.

After upsetting Warsaw Thursday for a chance to take on Columbia City in Saturday’s sectional final, Wawasee boys tennis was unable to advance any further, falling 4-1 to the Eagles.

If the early season is any indicator of how much TV time Andrew and Harrison Mevis – the Mevii – will get displaying their placekicking skills their parents can catch them on TV on just about any weekend if they’re unable to travel to the brothers’ Saturday college football venues. Iowa State, a Big XII Conference member, will play most of its games on Fox, but some on ESPN. Kid brother Harrison will likely be on the Southeast Conference Network, or CBS.

When Harrison Mevis committed to kick for the University of Missouri in September, 2019 as a 3-star recruit, he exchanged one set of tiger stripes for another. He exchanged the bright lights of Northern Lakes Conference play for the most gargantuan setting in college football: the Southerstern Conference. When the lights have shined their brightest, Mevis has made the most of every opportunity, having the most productive season by a Missouri freshman kicker in over a decade in 2020.

The 36th battle between Warsaw’s and Wawasee’s gridders for the W Trophy was a lopsided 49-7 win for the Tigers, and although the expected outcome was not a mystery to anyone in attendance before the opening kickoff, it was an opportunity to address some questions.

Despite a slow start out of the gate, the Manchester Squires found their composure in the second quarter of their game with the Whitko Wildcats and never looked back. Manchester rattled off 42 unanswered points to spoil Whitko’s homecoming game in a 42-7 win. It’s the second straight win for the Squires, who are now 3-3 this season, 2-2 in Three Rivers Conference play. On the other side, it’s the second straight loss for Whitko, bringing the team down to a 1-6 record, 1-5 in conference.
