Grace’s men’s basketball team departed for Sioux Falls, S.D., this week for the 2020 NAIA Championships in vehicles provided by Explorer Vans of Warsaw to give the Lancers comfortable transportation for the trip.
Beatty recognized as NCCAA National Athlete of Week
The Crossroads League Athletes of the Week were announced Monday, recognizing the top athletes from March 2-8. Sports information directors from the league nominate student-athletes for the award and vote on each week’s winners.
Warsaw’s Class 4A Sectional 4 final at North Side Gym started out as a tightly matched defensive battle. Wyatt Amiss capped off an 11-3 Tiger run when he nailed a 3 to put the squad ahead of Northridge 12-11 with 6:31 left in the first half. The 2019 defending sectional champs matched that burst with an 11-3 streak of their own, holding the lead for good thereafter, and clinching their second straight sectional title with a 60-38 win over the Tigers.
In a night consisting of resolute team defense, Argos boys basketball scraped by Triton 28-26 after a buzzer-beater from Michael Richard stole the show on in the IHSAA Class 1A Sectional 50 championship game Saturday night at The Trojan Trench. With the game winding down and deadlocked at 26, Caleb Ellis passed to Richard in the corner. He drove to the hoop and released the last shot of the game as time expired.

Luke Adamiec stepped to the free throw line with 1:50 left in overtime during the Class 4A Section 4 semifinal versus facing a 51-50 deficit. The 6-4 junior, who plays above the rim and draws plenty of fouls each game as coming off a 0-for-5 night at the free throw line against Goshen in Wednesday’s first round win.

Wawasee boys basketball, led by hot-shooting senior Austin Miller, took an early lead and never looked back, as they defeated Lakeland 56-45 in the Class 3A NorthWood boys basketball sectional Friday night. After a timeout early in the third quarter where the Warriors led by just four points, Miller stepped up to hit two deep threes on consecutive possessions.
Two members of Grace College’s women’s basketball team landed on the postseason All-Crossroads League Team. Vironnica Drake was named to the five-player First Team All-League, and Kyannah Stull was a Third Team honoree. Drake became Grace’s all-time leading scorer this season. She currently has 1,958 career points is on the brink of becoming the first player to score 2,000 points.
Lakeland Christian Academy will go for its first boys basketball sectional title after its 59-43 win over Northfield in the semifinals of the Class 1A Southern Wells Sectional Friday night.
Kyle Hatch knows dedication. He committed himself to wrestling excellence at Warsaw Community High School and went 168-16, including 134-6 over his last three prep seasons while placing three times at the IHSAA State Finals (eighth at 106 pounds in 2014, seventh at 120 in 2015, third at 152 in 2017). Hatch has stepped it up each year at Wabash College, placing eighth at 157 in the NCAA Division III Championships as a freshman in 2018 and sixth at 165 as a sophomore in 2019.
Grace’s men’s tennis team improved to 2-1 during its Kentucky trip after a 4-2 win over Georgetown on Thursday. The Lancers (16-5) rallied from an early deficit after dropping the doubles’ point. Max Rozas and Fabricio Galvan were victorious at No. 2 doubles (6-4), but the Tigers won the other two courts to take the doubles’ point.
