After an extensive search, Athletic Director Matt Binkerd hired just the third boys basketball head coach at Warsaw Community High School. The choice??Forty-year-old Grace College alum Matt Moore. The announcement came Saturday and is subject to school board approval, which is expected to come at its next scheduled meeting a week from today, April 27.
Despite the lack of a senior season, Warsaw baseball players Noah Burgh and Jacob Hutcherson announced Friday they will continue their baseball and academic careers are Purdue North-west and Trinity Christian College, respectively.

The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) announced today the members of the 2020 NFF Hampshire Honor Society, which is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college careers. Senior Alex Downard, a Campbell Trophy semifinalist back in the fall, was named to the NFF Hampshire Honor Society Tuesday.
Athletic director Eric Screeton announced Wednesday former Squire assistant Alyx Brandewie is the new head football coach at Manchester High School. Brandewie is originally from Minster, Ohio, and was teaching and coaching football and baseball there the last two years. Before that he was an assistant coach and eventually the defensive coordinator under former coach Greg Miller from 2016-18.
We have all learned a lot over the past month. We’ve learned a lot about ourselves, the people we live with, the people we work with and the people who have been our friends. I want to use my space this week talking about some of the things I have learned over this month. Some of them are sports-related, and some of them are not. Some of them, I hope, you find humorous. Anthony Leal and Sydney Parrish can add one more award to their expanding trophy rooms — Indiana's No. 1 All-Star jersey. Leal was a runaway winner for the IndyStar Mr. Basketball Award, receiving 103 of 236 votes. Parrish earned 102 votes to edge Madison Layden for the Miss Basketball Award.

Thirteen players have been selected for the 2020 IndyStar Indiana Boys All-Stars, it was announced Monday. Those chosen to the team are scheduled to play three games in June -- one exhibition game against the Indiana Junior All-Stars as well as home-and-home contests against the Kentucky All-Stars.
Indiana Wesleyan men’s basketball junior Kyle Mangas added to his season accolades, being named the 2020 Clarence “Bevo” Francis Award winner, announced by the Small College Basketball and the National Awards Committee. This award is given to just one player within Small College Basketball per season. This marks the first time in program history a Wildcat has earned the honor.
In the later stages of the 2015-16 Warsaw boys basketball season, Warsaw’s quest for perfection was still very much intact as they traveled to Fort Wayne Northrop on a January Saturday night. Jan. 23, to be exact. They were trailing in the dying moments of the game, and they passed the ball to Kyle Mangas.

They say you can’t run away from your problems, but Grace College’s men’s soccer team is putting one foot in front of the other in order to provide monetary relief for communities fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
So last Saturday I started to tackle the daunting task of looking back on the best Warsaw teams of all time. It’s daunting because there are so many teams worth mentioning, and because if you don’t mention a team that someone thinks should be mentioned, you open the door for trouble.

For me, there are times when items in the news become a little more real or personal. I find it fairly easy to compartmentalize things until those news items include people I know. It doesn’t have to be a close, personal friend. Over the course of a lifetime I’ve met hundreds, if not thousands of people, and I hope most of them, when my name is mentioned, smile. (No one bats 1.000 in that category, and I am by no means an exception to that rule.)
