Valley, Triton compete on the links with Bremen; Davis gets ace at Stonehenge
The beginning of high school cross country season came Tuesday for Warsaw Community High School and other teams. While Jacob Kissling and Wini Barnett were again the top WCHS runners, the 2020 Warsaw Tiger Paul Sibray Invitational looked different than the 2019 version in other ways.
So the sports world was set aflutter last week when Fernando Tatis Jr. of the San Diego Padres violated a basic rule of human decency—or that’s the way it was portrayed in the milliseconds afterward. Here’s the background. The Padres were beating the Texas Rangers 10-3 in the eighth inning of a game last Monday. San Diego had loaded the bases and Tatis was facing a 3-0 count.

There’s an old football adage stating that if you think you have two quarterbacks, you probably don’t have any. Culver Academy appears as if it will be able to dispute the adage in 2020, and Tippecanoe Valley wound up in no position Friday night to argue otherwise about the Eagles. With junior Jimmy Pisani and sophomore Cooper Farrall splitting QB duties, Culver blanked the Vikings 16-0 in each team’s season opener at Smith-Bibler Memorial Field.
The Warsaw Tigers don’t circle certain games beyond the first week. They strive to go 1-0 each Friday night. Huntington North put forth an effort that exploited a special teams miscue, exploited some early tackling weaknesses, and took advantage of opportunities despite a huge disparity in time of possession. However, the Tigers offense continued its brutal efficiency from last year, powered by Aaron Greene’s three rushing touchdowns of 22, 70 and 54 yards to defeat their hosts 42-35.
Wawasee opened the 2020 football season in convincing fashion Friday, Aug. 21 at Lakeland. The Warriors scored on four of five first-half possessions and beat the Lakers 42-0. Wawasee quarterback Parker Young completed 10-of-15 passes for 220 yards and four touchdowns. He connected on 8-of-10 for 184 yards in the first half as the visitors built a 28-0 lead.

The Warsaw Tiger football team established many milestones on offense (rushing in particular) and special teams during the 2019 season. The team made history with its first sectional title further sweetened by beating perennial power Penn 35-18, another first for the program. Motorcades, painted business windows, signs and motivational notes and treats were in order in their post-season journey, until ending the season 9-3 in a 42-28 regional loss to Merrillville. However, this year the Tigers collectively are humble, and thankful to be playing high school football amid a global pandemic.
Strictly statistically, Tippecanoe Valley football appears to be starting from scratch in 2020. Consider that 93% of the Vikings’ rushing yards last season were compiled by players who have since graduated, as well as 99% of the passing yards — nearly all those in the person of versatile two-year starter Tanner Trippiedi — and 71% of the receiving yards. Over on the other side of the ball, six of the top seven tacklers have departed. Gone largely within that group are 26 of the 29 takeaways that the Valley defense racked up and 20 of the team’s 23 sacks.

The jigsaw puzzle of education-based high school athletics and performing arts programs in our nation’s schools is nearing completion for the 2020-21 school year. Although there are no two plans alike from Alaska to Wyoming, sports in every state are still on the calendar at some point during the coming year.
Triton High School football has adopted a mantra for 2020. It’s “Get to Tomorrow.” “Hopefully we can get through all of them,” says 13th-year head coach Rodney Younis of the games on the IHSAA Class 1A Trojans’ schedule. “We want to make memories for these seniors.”
Jon Reutebuch looks to three main reasons he sees for improvement in his Wawasee High School football team in his second season as head coach. “We’re excited,” says Reutebuch, who takes his IHSAA Class 4A Warriors into the 2020 season open Friday at Lakeland in LaGrange. “We feel like we have improved line depth and play. That should help us improve on our record from last year (Wawasee went 2-8 overall and 1-6 in the Northern Lakes Conference in 2019).

There was a stretch in the Manchester High School football team’s preparation for this season that conditioning drills were replaced by pencils. New head coach Alyx Brandewie says his Squires handled it well.
So, here we are. High school sports teams have started their season, generally. Football players have yet to play their first game, but pretty much everyone else has. But, as we expected, there are hiccups. Maconaquah Schools have told their kids to stay home and learn remotely after one family came down with COVID-19—three of them are students at the high school, another is a student at the middle school and their mom works in the cafeteria.

This week marks the 30-year anniversary of the closing of the Warsaw Speedway, so it seems only fitting to honor another group of drivers and support personnel that made such an impact to the local speedway, the fans, and the sport of racing. Five season championships and numerous feature wins were won by this year’s recipients being inducted into the Warsaw Speedway Hall of Fame. A total of 11 new members will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this Saturday night at Plymouth Speedway during intermission of the evening’s racing events.
