Women’s soccer explodes with 6 goals; Lancers improve to 5-0 on the year; Women’s Tennis wins pair at Goshen
Mishawaka Cavemen head coach Keith Kinder had a clock management challenge. The Warsaw Tiger offense, leading 33-32 with 4:12 left in the final quarter, had already scored touchdowns on five previous possessions. They were pushing for their sixth score at the guest’s 10-yard line when Kinder used all three available timeouts on consecutive Warsaw rushing plays to assure the visitors had enough time to tie the game if Warsaw did indeed score again.
Coming in this week on a two-game skid, the Manchester football team looked to get back in the win column and climb up in the conference standings. Against the Rochester Zebras, a team about to play only their second game of the season, the Squires made the absolute most of it. Behind junior halfback Braxton Ream’s four-touchdown and more than 300 rushing yards performance, the Squires took care of business and rolled over the Zebras 41-14 Friday night in North Manchester.
Grace College’s women’s tennis team had little trouble handling Adrian on Friday. The Lady Lancers won 6-1, securing their third straight win on the young season. Grace was dominant in doubles’ play, setting the tone for the afternoon. Jayna Armstrong and Dayana Ortega did not drop a game (6-0) at No. 1 doubles.

Warsaw’s Audrey Grimm continued to be grim news for the rest of the Northern Lakes Conference on Thursday, and her Tiger teammates were none too shabby, either.
Grace College’s cross country team is filled with youth. But the 2020 Lancers also have high hopes in what could be a very promising fall season. The program is coming off one of its best NCCAA showings ever. The men’s team placed third at the 2019 NCCAA National Championships, tying the best finish in team history. The women were sixth, one spot away from a program record.

Grace’s volleyball team had two straight road matches in the Crossroads League to open up the 2020 season. The result was the same both times. Grace picked up its second consecutive sweep, blanking Mt. Vernon Nazarene 3-0 on Wednesday. The match was a battle despite the 3-0 scoreline with two of the sets reaching extra points.

The Battle at Brookwood proved to be quite the battle for Grace’s women’s golf team on Monday and Tuesday. But the Lady Lancers demonstrated resilience, placing second at Brookwood Golf Club.
The first Crossroads League Attacker of the Week honor this season went to Grace’s Anna Frey. Frey earned the honor on Tuesday after leading Grace’s volleyball team to a 3-0 road win at Taylor on Saturday.
It’s one of those weeks that I have several thoughts running around in my head, and rather than focus only on one and ignore the others we’ll skip around to touch on as many as we have room for. When Phil Jensen stepped down from coaching at Warsaw, he was just glad to be alive to make that choice. He had fallen from of the attic of his home and suffered a serious head injury. The Warsaw Tiger gridders traveled to The Rock Pile in Plymouth where the hosts held Senior Night in their season home opener. A quartet of Tiger seniors, Mason Martz, Colton Wampler (33 carries, 125 yards, 2 touchdowns and 4 extra-point kicks), Aaron Greene (2 TD runs, 51 yards rushing, 26 yards passing), and Caden Silveus (interception and a tackle for loss) had designs of their own Senior Night festivities resulting in a 28-14 win in one of the states oldest football rivalry matches.
Coming off two straight shutout wins, the Wawasee football team was unable to overcome Northridge Friday night as they fell 20-0 to the visiting team. Although the Warrior defense showed the same unyielding resolve it had the first two weeks of the season, the offense was unable to put together any scoring drives against the stout Raider defense, which has given up no points on the year thus far.
