William James “Jim” McCleary, 87, Winona Lake, passed away today, Aug. 29, 2017, at St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis.   Arrangements are pending with Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, Warsaw.  

Carol Ann Forbes, 81, Winona Lake, passed away Monday, Aug. 28, 2017, at Parkview Hospital Randallia, Fort Wayne.   Arrangements are pending with Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, Warsaw.  

COLUMBIA CITY — Ruth A. Corner, 67, Columbia City, died at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017, of natural causes suddenly at her home. She was born May 30, 1950, in Kimmell, a daughter of Garrad E. and Rose Wilder Murphy. Her formative years were spent in Noble County. She graduated from Wolf Lake High School. She was employed at Mutual Security Life for three years, United Telephone from 1970 until 1988, and Bertsch Services in Warsaw from 1988 until 2009. On Aug. 2, 1969, she was united in marriage to Ralph L. Corner Jr. They made their home in Pierceton, then in 1972 moving to Chapman Lake and in 1974 to Warsaw. In 2009 they moved to Ormas and in September 2016 to their home in Columbia City. She was a member of West Etna Community Church. Surviving relatives include her husband, Ralph; two children, Eric (Christy) Corner, Columbia City, and Kristy Zickefoose, Mishawaka; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nora Jane Jones, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Janice Rockey, Ormas; and three brothers: Gene Murphy, Aurora, Colo.; Jim Murphy, Fort Wayne; and Randy Murphy, Ormas. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Corey Corner. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, with visitation from noon to 2 p.m. Friday.  Burial will be in Thorn Cemetery, Ormas. ***** Memorials to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. J. David Nichols was born in Dallas, Texas, on Jan. 30, 1949, to A. Miller and Flora Paulson Nichols. He went to be with his Lord on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, after having multiple health issues.  He was a 1967 graduate of Warsaw Community High School. He spent most of his lifetime in Kosciusko County. On Aug. 3, 1974, he was married to Karen Conley, who survives.  David enjoyed working at Miller and Sons Lumberyard in Silver Lake. He also spent time working at American Home Center, West Roofing and Menards. He attended Pillsbury and Grace College. He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Oswego. He loved singing praises and was a song leader, helping lead the Sunday services.  He is survived by his daughter, Erika Nichols, Warsaw; grandchildren: Jordan, Avery and Jaclyn; his sister, Sara “Sally” Nichols, Pierceton; nephews, Jeremiah Nichols, Illinois, and Joshua Nichols, Florida; brother, Paul Nichols, Warsaw; nephew, Adam Nichols; nieces, Hannah Nichols and Jodi Nichols, both of Warsaw; sister-in-law, Ann Nichols, Ohio; and nieces, Jaimee Nichols, Florida, and Kathryn Nichols, Ohio. David was preceded in death by his parents and his brother James Nichols. David was an active member of Kosciusko “Back to the Days,” where he loved going to historical re-enactments portraying mountain men from the 1820s-1840s era. He was very knowledgeable in all areas of that time period. He loved sharing information with people at the log cabin at the fairgrounds and with children at the schools.  His voice, wit, sense of humor and orneriness will be greatly missed. A memorial service to celebrate David’s life will take place at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept.  3, at First Baptist Church of Oswego. Dr. Ron Manahan will officiate. Glenna I. Waldenville, 43, North Webster, passed away at 6:40 a.m. Aug. 28, 2017, in her residence. On Dec. 31, 1973, she was born in Plymouth to Glen and Sharon Davis Ashby. A lifelong Kosciusko County resident, she was united in marriage in Warsaw to Corey Waldenville. She worked for Pyrotech Inc. in Columbia City in the production section. She is survived by her husband, Corey; children: Schyler Waldenville, Brad Waldenville and Paige Waldenville, all of Nappanee; and her parents, Sharon (John) Long, Warsaw, and Glen (Susan) Ashby, Warsaw. She is further survived by her siblings: Sherry (William) Hardesty, North Webster; Jennifer (Chad) Hull, Columbia City; Glen (Michelle) Ashby Jr., Florida; and Sunshine Kyler, Marion. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, in McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, with Chaplain Bob Jarboe officiating. PLYMOUTH — Vonetta “Bonnie” Keller, 85, a resident of Argos, passed away after a brief illness at 11:55 a.m. Aug. 25, 2017, in Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne. Bonnie was born the daughter of Von Andrews and Hazel Sharp Andrews on Feb. 25, 1932, in Bourbon (Marshall County).  As a lifelong resident and a graduate of Green Township School, she worked many years as a seamstress at Hart Schaffner and Marx, Rochester, where she retired. In her younger years she could be found on her tractor helping her father on the farm and later she spent time scrapbooking. On May 18, 1956, after being introduced to Allen, she became his bride.  He survives along with her son, Roger, and wife Terry Keller, Argos. She was further blessed with her loving grandchildren: Becky Miller, Bryan Keller, Ben Keller, Aric Shufelt, Amy (Ken) Rose, Miranda (Chris) Singleton and Eric (Kimberly) Gildner; and great-grandchildren: Ashton and Braden Miller; Braxton Keller; Kody, Kyle and Wade Rose; and Skyler and Chase Singleton. Also, Bonnie is survived by her sisters: Clova Bollhoeffer, California; Joy (Scotch) Carr, Bristol; and Donna Nichole, Dandridge, Tenn. Preceeding in death were her parents and two sisters, Marcille Sickmiller and Lucille Schaffer. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 S. Madison St., Plymouth, IN 46563. Alexis Cadence Hall, Warsaw, passed away unexpectedly at 7:47 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, 2017, at Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw, at the age of 13.  She was born March 3, 2004, in Columbia City, to Amy Renae Conley and Joshua Evan Hall.  Alexis attended Washington Elementary School and was an eighth-grader at Edgewood Middle School, both in Warsaw. She loved music, fashion and roller skating — countless hours she spent doing just the simple things a kid does and enjoyed. Alexis’ life may seem too short, but she lived each day just being herself. She may not have realized just how much she touched the lives of everyone around her each day. Alexis will be dearly missed and will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends.

NORTH WEBSTER – Thomas R. “Tom” Plew, 70, of North Webster, passed away at 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2017, at Grace Village Healthcare, Winona Lake. He was born Sept. 25, 1946, to Bertis “Bert” and Julia Bruno Plew. 

Roberta G. Hoffman, 93, passed away at 4:55 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, 2017, in Timbercrest Senior Living Community, North Manchester. She was born Jan. 3, 1924, in Detroit, Mich., to John P. and Hazel Eversole Guthrie. Her first marriage was to David L. Winger; they divorced. In 1955 she married John W. Dickey; he died in 1995. In 2001 she married Tim R. Hoffman; he survives. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Sept. 9 at the peace garden of the Church of the Brethren, 1306 Beckley St., North Manchester. Verna May Felts,  88, Mishawaka, formerly of Warsaw, passed away at 12:26 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, 2017, in North Woods Village at Edison Lake, Mishawaka.   She was born Dec. 15, 1928, in Stratton, Neb., to Gustaf and Hazel Wollman Miller. She was a Warsaw resident since 1957. On Oct. 17, 1957, in Stratton, she was united in marriage to W. Roland Felts, who preceded her in death on June 14, 2012).

Alexis Cadence Hall, 13, Warsaw, passed away unexpectedly at 7:47 a.m. Aug. 25, 2017, at Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw. FORT WAYNE — Charlotte Zollinger, 88, passed away Aug, 22, 2017, at Bethlehem Woods Nursing and Rehabilitation.  She was born Aug. 20, 1929, in Osborne, Ohio, to Forrest V. and Myrtle M. Weaver LeCount. She graduated from Syracuse High School in 1947 and married Robert R. Zollinger in 1948. 

NAPPANEE –Kenneth Young   78, was called home by the Lord at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, 2017, at his residence, because he was done with him here on Earth. 

NORTH WEBSTER — Steven C. “Steve” VanCuren, 61, Leesburg, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017, at his home.  He was born Feb. 21, 1956, in Warsaw, to Duane W. and Virginia M. Plonski VanCuren. He was a lifetime North Webster/Leesburg area resident and graduated in 1974 from Wawasee High School, Syracuse. He was employed at R.R. Donnelly & Sons, Warsaw, since 1985 and was formerly a truck driver.

Leamon (Eddie) Lowther Jr., 62, Warsaw, passed away at 3:17 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017, in his residence.  He was born Feb. 11, 1955, in Westmoreland, Pa., to Leamon Lowther Sr. and Emma Jeanne Booth Lowther. He was discharged as a wounded veteran of the United States Air Force after sustaining a gunshot wound. He loved spending time with his family and spoiling his nieces and nephews. He also liked watching television with his dog Bud and traveling in his spare time. He is survived by nephews, Chad (spouse Tonya) Ouimet and Shaun (spouse Janiece) Ouimet, both of Warsaw. Other surviving nieces and nephews from Malone, N.Y., include Leonard and Robine Deshane, Tina and Mike Pritchard, Temecca and Jeremy Rust, Tammy Deshane, and Jason and Ashley Grant; numerous other nieces and nephews also survive.  He was preceded in death by one brother, Henry D. Thea E. Winston, 3 weeks, Warsaw, passed away at 5:40 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017, at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.  She was born July 26, 2017, at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City, to William Robert and Amanda Quiroz Winston.

AKRON — Helen L. Cox, 87, formerly of Akron, died at 6:55 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Wakarusa. Arrangements are pending at Earl-Love Funeral Home, Akron.

Ned Allen Chamberlain, Elkhart, formerly of Atwood, passed away unexpectedly at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, 2017, at his residence at the age of 41. He was born Feb. 8, 1976, in Aberdeen, Wash., to Marilyn Marie Moody Chamberlain and Wayne Lee Chamberlain.  Ned graduated from high school in Aberdeen and served in the U.S. Navy. He moved to the Atwood area in 1999. In 2016, Ned moved to Elkhart and worked as a polisher at Complexus Medical, Mishawaka. He had been a resident of Kosciusko County for 18 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Kyla and Natasha Chamberlain, both of Columbia City; parents, Marilyn Marie and Wayne Lee Chamberlain, Humptulips, Wash.; brother, Kenneth (wife Melissa) Willis, Spokane, Wash.; and his sister, Trisha (husband Lt. Ben) Perry, South Korea. WABASH — Blake Douglas Shafer, 35, Fort Wayne, died at 6:49 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, 2017, at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne, as a result of a motorcycle accident.  He was born Jan. 19, 1982, in Warsaw, to Matthew and Nancy Huff Shafer. Blake was a 2000 graduate of Northfield High School. He then received his associate degree in diesel and agriculture technology from University of Northwestern Ohio.  He was a member of the Indiana Vintage Snowmobile Association and the Peru Maennerchor Lodge. He enjoyed all motor sports, especially motorcycles and vintage snowmobiles. Blake loved being with his family. He is survived by his parents, Matthew and Nancy Shafer, Wabash; brother, Bryan (Rebecca) Shafer, North Manchester; grandmother, Tona Huff, Burket; aunt, Angie Kuhn, Rochester; uncle, Kim (Janet) Huff, Burket; and several cousins.  He was preceded in death by grandparents, John Huff and Ron and Joyce Shafer. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Ave., Wabash, with Pastor Wayne Balmer officiating. Brian Winters, 76, died peacefully in his Warsaw home Monday, Aug. 21, 2017. He was born in Rochester. After living a number of years in the New York City area, Brian and his wife moved back to Indiana and made Warsaw their home.  He was a retiree of BASF Corp. (Flint Ink), of which he was a supervisor. He was a member of the Warsaw congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Helen, and his daughter Lori (spouse Marshall) Clevenger, Plymouth. Also surviving are one brother, John P. Winters (spouse Kristie), Wayne, Mich.; and two sisters, Penny Sherman and Susan Watson, both of Oklahoma. No memorial service will be held at this time. NORTH MANCHESTER — Mary Ellen Armey, 89, North Manchester, died at 7:32 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, 2017, at Peabody Health Care, North Manchester.  She was born Aug. 22, 1927, in Kosciusko County, to John and Anna Ulrey Winger. She married Max Edwin Armey in Fort Wayne on Feb. 4, 1946; he died March 26, 2008.  Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel, 207 W. Main St., North Manchester, with Brian Daniels officiating.
