Voicing Opinion

Editor, Times-Union:
I would be less than honest if I didn’t admit that all of the recent letters to the editor that have been written about me have not bothered me. Of course, everyone wants to hear only good things about themselves. I even called Curt Herman who organized the event complaining about it. It is not his fault, he didn’t say anything, I did.
After a few days to digest this situation I have to say this is exactly how democracy should work and it is a privilege to be a part of it. What is so wonderful about our country is that everyone deserves the opportunity to voice their opinion. I may not like what is said, but I respect every person’s opportunity to say what is in their hearts. I would much rather live in a country where we can say what we wish than to live in a country where you may pay a price for speaking your mind. I take pride myself in speaking my mind and would be a hypocrite if I didn’t take pride in those who do the same. I may not be the most eloquent of representatives, I may be a bit too direct, I may say things that don’t always come out as I had hoped, but there isn’t a person reading this article who hasn’t said something they either regret or didn’t come out the way they intended, that’s life.
I truly believe that every one in our community has nothing but the best interest of our families and children in mind. Freedom of voice is what makes us so great. Whether we agree or not we are blessed to have the privilege to speak our minds. Is this the greatest country or what?

Rebecca, I am not in your district but appreciate your response to those recent letters. My children are no longer in the Warsaw Community School System so I'm not familiar with the details of Common Core. I will say, though, that I am rather familiar with the persons who wrote opinions related to the Common Core meeting. From what I can tell, those folks complain about absolutely everything. They are never satisfied unless a representative agrees 100% with their agenda. They push to remove people and then start complaining about the new rep. It's a way of life for them. Seems to be no desire to work together. They are a small group but a loud group. Just a general annoyance, I think. But, as you said, everyone has a right to their opinion and a right to state it. I, like you, don't always convey my thoughts in a "soothing" manner. It happens sometimes and as you can tell, people are ready to pounce as soon as it does. I'm pretty sure you and I have very different views on many issues but again, I appreciate your honest and nonconfrontational response.
