Kubacki For Victims

Editor, Times-Union:
All too often victims of domestic violence do not have a strong voice. But in Indiana, Rep. Rebecca Kubacki provides one.
The Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence is proud to say thanks to her for her work to advance legislation to help victims of violence.
In the recent legislative session, Rep. Kubacki was the House sponsor of SEA 138, which lifts a funding cap on awards to local domestic violence programs given by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. These funds support critical and emergency services to victims and families experiencing domestic violence.  The bill also allows for an advocate to accompany a victim to court in civil proceedings. This is important because often victims are scared of facing their abuser, even scared of the legal system itself, and are afraid to move forward. This legislation will provide the necessary emotional support to victims to help them get additional protections for themselves and their family.
Rep. Kubacki also authored several other bills during the 2014 session to support and protect families, including HB 1014 that allows for the expedited dissolution of a marriage in cases of domestic violence so the victim can be free of her abuser more quickly, and HB 1016 that allows juveniles who are victims of dating violence to get protective orders on their own, without seeking approval of an adult.
Rep. Kubacki grew up in abusive home and watched her mother suffer as a victim of domestic violence. That experience has led her to become an advocate for others. In addition to her work in the legislature, locally she is helping The Beaman Home in their efforts to build a new emergency shelter and outreach center to better serve the community’s domestic violence victims and their children.
We feel fortunate to have Rep. Kubacki working for victims of domestic violence, in her own district and throughout the state. ICADV applauds her work and thanks her for her continuing support.
