NWCC Marks 10 Years As 'Heart Of Community'
Erin Smith
NWCC Director of Operations

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the North Webster Community Center.
We have come a long way in the 10 years since we first opened our doors. We have become an important part of the North Webster community and way of life, the true “Heart of the Community.”
During the past decade, we have developed a strong walking program that is free to the public, open gym time as well as organized activities such as volleyball, wrestling, gymnastics, baseball and softball activities, basketball, Pickleball, Cornhole and shuffleboard. We offer art classes, summer clinics, camps and events for our younger school-age children. We host many meetings and events like Boy Scouts, Kiwanis, AA and Al-anon, the Annual Chamber of Commerce dinner, a communitywide garage sale, Kids Business Fair, Mermaid Festival cutie king and queen pageant and Queen of Lakes pageant, Lioness Craft Bazaar and our Annual Charity Auction to name a few.
We have been lucky to have several businesses call NWCC home during this time. Our current tenants are the YMCA, North Webster Community Public Library, Senior Primelife Enrichment Center, The Cake Lady, Tippecanoe Watershed Foundation and the Lakeland Regional Sewer District.
I think many of us would agree that change can be a good thing so this year was a re-building year of the NWCC Board of Directors and staff. The Board of Directors added seven new members in 2014 while a handful resigned after several years of service. New members include Jenny Shear, Matt Nei, Gary Colby, Sue Fiedeke, Laura Eyer, Jeff Moore and Todd Oesch.
Jon Sroufe, who served as board president for 10 years, decided to step down but will continue to serve on the executive committee. Dennis Wagoner will now serve as the board president and Stu Coverstone will be vice president while Janet Miller will remain as treasurer.
This past June, I became the new director of operations and Janna Braden joined the team as the programming coordinator. With a building of this size, they have also brought in Jason Farmer to handle daily maintenance concerns. Connie Adams continues to work as the accounts manager.
This administrative team is striving to bring life back to the Center with a variety of new activities and events. With the help of a grant from the Dekko Foundation, we will be able to offer a wider variety of summer programming as well as year-long classes for children and their families.
“We are very excited about the grant from the Dekko Foundation,” said Smith. “It will allow us to reach families that may have never participated in Center events before. Our greatest challenge, however, is getting the word out about our programs or needs.”
After the extremely difficult winter, NWCC experienced a lot of damage due to roof leaks, ceiling tiles collapsing and flooding. Donations are currently being accepted to help raise the necessary funds to repair/replace the current roof.
