Editor, Times-Union:
It has been said by someone, “make new friends but keep the old; one is silver, the other is gold.” May I introduce some of you to a new friend. His name is Richard Wurmbrand. He was the founder of the Voice of the Martyrs. I received an article from the President of the V.O.M. He tells how the founder arrived in the states in 1960 to bring a message from the underground church.  His message was “We your brothers and sisters are being beaten, imprisoned and tortured for our faith, Please do not forget us.”
He carried with him many scars from torture that he endured during his 14 years in a communist prison. As he attended church services in America he was greatly alarmed by the lack of prayers by the pastors for our persecuted brothers and sisters.
I must confess as a pastor and missionary for many years I lacked a lot of concern and burden for the persecuted church. As I read a V.O.M. book, I felt the need to do something about God’s word to his people in the book of Hebrews. This is God’s command to his people. “Remember those in prison as if you were their prisoners (fellow), and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.” (Heb. 13:3) The commentator in the Life Application Study Bible has this to say on the verse, “We are to have empathy for those in prison especially for (not limited to) Christians imprisoned for their faith. Jesus said that his true followers would represent him as they visit those in prison.” (Matthew 25:36)
I’m glad to say that there is a day in November that is set aside to pray for God’s people and our brothers and sisters. May the Lord do something new in our lives and churches that we will make it a daily cry to Him for them.
If any of you would like to get material from the V.O.M. you may write to: The Voice Of The Martyrs. P.O. Box 443, Bartleville, OK 74005-9934.
