Gay Marriage

Editor, Times-Union:
As you may or may not know, the Indiana General Assembly is back in session for the 2014 Short Session. Legislators from around the state are going to be meeting for 30 total days to debate many bills that are on the agenda. However, I feel that the main purpose of this session is going to be HJR-3, the constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in this state. The question that I would like answered is, why?
I’ll start by answering the “It’s in the Bible!” statements that many of you have already said at this point of the letter. First off, I’m a Christian and proud to be one. However, I use the Bible as my personal guide book, my personal rule book, and not as a mandated rule book for society. My individual salvation is not based on the actions of the rest of society. I am reminded of the passages, “Master, which is the great commandment in the Law? Jesus said to him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and the great commandment. And the second is like unto this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hangeth the whole Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 22:36-40 GNV), and “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (2 Corinthians 3:17).
Another question along the same line is, how many of you were up in arms when A&E suspended the “Duck Dynasty” “star” (I use quotes because there are no stars in reality shows – but that’s for another time). Now how many people actually read ALL of what he said, and not just the headline where it said, “‘Duck Dynasty’ Star suspended by A&E”? People went crazy because his free speech rights were violated (Spoiler: They weren’t). This guy actually said, “"We never, ever judge someone on who's going to heaven, hell. That’s the Almighty’s job. We just love ’em, give ’em the good news about Jesus – whether they’re homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort ’em out later; you see what I’m saying?” (Quote found here: http://www.businessinsider.com/duck-dynasty-star-phil-roberts-under-fire-for-homosexuality-is-a-sin-comments-2013-12).
Of all the issues that are being discussed in the General Assembly, why is gay marriage at the top of the list? Does anyone else know that the Indiana State Police is tracking cell phones, but won’t say why? Want to read it about it? Go here: http://www.indystar.com/story/news/2013/12/08/indiana-state-police-tracking-cellphones-but-wont-say-how-or-why/3908333/ It would be nice to know why and to stop it from happening.
I don’t know what surprises me more, the fact that we are even discussing gay marriage, or the fact that there are so many people who say they are conservative in favor of this amendment. I am a conservative person of faith and a human who believes in liberty for all humanity. Why is society trying to tell others how to live their lives when we cannot do so?
