City & Recycling Depot Joining Forces For Clean-Up Week
Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer
From the Mayor

This morning it was 19 degrees at our airport … a new record low for April 3.  Last year at this time we started our spring cleanup program in the 70- and 80-degree days of March.
I am confident that over the next two weeks a warm-up will hit when the City of Warsaw and KC Recycling Depot kick off the Community Clean Up Week/Environmental Action Week from Saturday, April 20 through Friday, April 26. Mark your calendars and plan to participate. Let’s talk about getting organized for that week.
First, gather up all of your recyclable clutter because the KC Recycling Depot will be ready to really help you out that week. On Earth Day – Saturday, April 20 – from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the KC Recycling Depot will hold an open house where they will be accepting tires for recycling. Tires will be collected through Thursday the 25th at noon. On Saturday the 20th, the first two car tires will be accepted free! That day, they will also shred all of your secure documents for free (residential only) and accept blue jeans for recycling. The entire week they will accept electronics for the reduced price of only 2 cents per pound.
Remember, our city garbage pickup crew cannot accept any item with electronic circuitry. IDEM has banned these items from the landfill. Old television sets, computers, printers, etc. can always be properly disposed of at the KC Recycling Depot, but at a reduced price during Environmental Action Week. Also, remember that KC Recycling Depot will always accept, for free, all household chemicals that should never be sent to the landfill or dumped down the drain!  The Depot is at 220 S. Union St. Watch for more details of Environmental Action Week in the soon-to-be-released KC Recycling Newsletter.
The City of Warsaw wants to encourage neighborhoods to work together to beautify their properties and help seniors or those unable to help themselves. At the suggestion of a constituent, our council has responded with an organized Community Clean Up Week schedule of events.
First, the big news. The Public Works Department will offer a special one-time spring leaf pickup on your regularly scheduled trash day from Monday, April 22 through Friday, April 26. Remember to rake all of those leftover leaves out to the curb by 7 a.m. on your trash day.
As always, we will continue to regularly pick up yard debris as well. That week only, we will also pick up two large items (instead of just one) with the regular trash. This will include couches, chairs, mattresses, box springs, etc. Please go to the city website (warsaw.in.gov) for complete details of what the city can and cannot accept (select the “Departments” tab, select “Public Works,” then select “Trash Collection”).
The city will also kick off the Dial-a-Dumpster and Dial-a-Truck Program.  Call the Public Works Department (574-372-9561) to participate in those programs (city residents only).
Tuesday, April 23 will be “Kids’ Clean-up Day.” Community groups can contact council member Diane Quance (dquance54@kcaccess.com) for assistance in scheduling a “clean-up project” in a public space that may need some attention. A group of special needs students and their peer tutors will descend on the downtown for a spruce-up. All kids are encouraged to set an example in their neighborhoods by picking up trash and helping others to do the same.
Pick up, clean up, and help a neighbor.  Take pride in your community and neighborhood!
