Why Obama Fans Are Walking Away
Gary Gerard
Times-Union General Manager

You know it’s a bad week for President Barack Obama when you hear things like this ...
President Obama “obviously likes giving speeches more than he does running the executive branch
“What part of the presidency does Obama like? He doesn't like dealing with other politicians – that means his own cabinet, that means members of the congress, either party. He doesn't particularly like the press ... He likes to write the speeches, likes to rewrite what Favreau and the others wrote for the first draft.
"So what part does he like? He likes going on the road, campaigning, visiting businesses like he does every couple of days somewhere in Ohio or somewhere. But what part does he like? He doesn't like lobbying for the bills he cares about. He doesn't like selling to the press. He doesn't like giving orders or giving somebody the power to give orders. He doesn't seem to like being an executive.”
... from Chris Matthews on MSNBC’s “Hardball.”
You may recall Matthews was the guy who so famously said he felt a “thrill going up my leg” after hearing Obama speak in 2008.
His rant this week sounded more like something you’d hear on Fox News.
I know why some Obama devotees are becoming disillusioned. It’s not so much that they think these scandals are all that horrible. It’s because they believe these scandals give conservatives ammunition.
It’s precisely what conservatives said they feared about Obama all along – that he would oversee an overzealous, out-of-control behemoth of a federal government.
Of course, anytime anyone suggested that, they were pooh-poohed as being alarmist, a wing-nut or just plain stupid.
But now, with all the scandals, the giant new government programs, the expansion of existing programs and the monumental debt, it’s pretty easy for conservatives to say, “I told you so.”
I really don’t know what to think about this triple whammy of scandals.
We have the murdered ambassador, the IRS targeting of conservative groups and the surreptitious coveting of Associated Press telephone records.
I wish I had a crystal ball to look ahead a year or so. There is the potential for some serious trouble for the Obama administration.
Just one quick scan of the headlines tells you it’s going to take a long time to sort through all these accusations and recriminations.
There will be hearings and testimony on top of hearings and testimony.
I suppose there’s a chance this will all go away quietly, but I doubt it.
Whether this stuff is overbaked or not, it does point to an adminstration that is a bit out of control.
I think the IRS thing is the most serious.
NBC News reported Friday  that the IRS deliberately chose not to reveal that it had wrongly targeted conservative groups until after the 2012 presidential election.
There was also some interesting testimony Friday on Capitol Hill by the Treasury Department’s inspector general.
Apparently, he told senior Treasury officials in June 2012 he was investigating the Internal Revenue Service’s screening of politically active organizations seeking tax exemptions.
That makes it  sound like Obama administration officials  – not just the IRS – were aware of the IRS shenanigans during the presidential campaign year.
If, in fact, the Obama administration knew what the IRS was up to but didn’t reveal it or do anything to stop it during the president’s re-election campaign, that’s troublesome.
President Obama would be wise to do his best to rein things in – in a hurry. But he really doesn’t seem like that kind of president. He seems more hands off than that, like he wants to be on the sidelines instead of in the fray.
One thing is for sure, though, the guy with the worst job in American right now is the president’s press secretary, Jay Carney.
I would not want to be in his shoes.
Mostly, Carney just deflects questions from the press by saying that he or the president “can’t comment” because of the “ongoing investigation.”
That’s a pretty generally used and abused dodge when you really don’t want to say anything. On the face of it, it’s simply not true.
Carney comments all the time on stuff that’s “under investigation.”
Sandy Hook was “under investigation.” He and the president made all kinds of comments about that.
The Boston Marathon bombing was “under investigation.” He and the president – and every other law enforcement official even remotely connected to the bombing – were commenting constantly.
Don’t be fooled. They could comment if they wanted to without compromising any investigation. They just don’t want to. Not that I blame them. I wouldn’t want to comment either if a bunch of my underlings were screwing up left and right.
The problem with all this is the distraction factor.
Every minute spent on all these scandals is a minute not spent on fixing the economy or tweaking the health care law or working on the budget, entitlements and deficit.
And those issues need lots of work.

Obviously you are a liberal, Charles. That was an expression as i would not shoot my T.V. i just can't tolerate the liberal media that preaches if you do not like Obummer etc etc that you are a racist. 10 years ago things were better at least for me anyways and most would agree i believe. Gas was more realistic and in fact that year i got the biggest bonus at work because they said that was the best year they had financially ever. We make plastic products for the R.V. industry and go carts and many other things. Obama is the worst president in history polls have shown and i agree. He said would not spend as much as Bush did but look at the facts and all the debt he has racked up and it is disturbing. Obamacare is a joke and people are paying more and will be paying more when it takes affect. The only policy of his i agree with is wanting to raise minimum wage. This affects the majority in a positive way because even places that pay more than the minimum know to be competitive they need to raise what they pay to keep and get more workers. An example is a factory down the road from me did just that when the minimum wage went the last time and they raised their starting wages by 1.50 an hour when that took affect. Look at the standard of living in the 60's on minimum wage compared to today and the numbers don't lie and today minimum wage would be just above 16 an hour to have the same standard of living. So i would agree with Obama on that issue and then maybe most of his supporters would be more willing to work rather than sit on their butts and take the handouts. Romney was right about the 47% that would never bite the hand that feeds them.

Scandals, NDAA (another scandal itself)constant lies etc. The media seems to sensationalize the symptoms without ever mentioning the obvious root causes of the symptoms. America has lost her soul. Where is our national integrity? What kind of "we the people" elect someone bent on the destruction of the very country that afforded him so many wonderful opportunities. Have we forgotten that we have children and grandchildren who have to grow up in this country? There's no where else for them to go. With freedom of religion we may not have to be a "Christian" society or a 'Muslim" society or even a "Jewish" society but we can't be a "Godless" society either. We can't proclaim inalienable rights endowed by God if we develop, promote or even accept a nation with the notion that there is no God. Duh, no God, no rights endowed by a Creator, only a tyrannical state to replace God and deny you have any rights. No matter which of the one true religions you hold fast to, pray to the One True God for the spiritual healing of our country and pray that any of our leaders who haven't sold their soul to the dark side for self gain may find the spiritual strength to do the right thing and clean up this mess. We need good leaders then we need to follow that goodness. All important undertakings require the blessing of Deity. We can't let them divide and conquer us with political and religious maneuvering by causing us to focus on our differences rather than our common heritage of freedom and self determination. Our constitution doesn't give us any rights but enumerates those natural rights incidental to creation itself. That guarantees our right to be different and should be a strength, not a weakness.

As is the practice in today's political climate, one's supporters no longer walk away...they just dig in deeper and widen the ideological gap. There are no more statesmen in Washington just partisans seeking to enrich themselves.

Obama knew about the IRS and i guarantee he gave the orders to do what they did. I never voted for the moron that had no experience compared to the other qualified candidates. I still proudly have my bumper stickers of "bend over here comes the change" and my newest one of " Armed or victim it is my choice not Obama's and my favorite one "yeah I'll give up my guns, Ammo first!!!" The Obama administration is purposely buying up all the ammunition as a form of gun control. They have bought enough for a 20+ year war and it is next to impossible to find any ammo. I see people all the time that have called and driven everywhere but can't find any. A real gun owner never runs out of ammo in the first place and always has a big stash put away just for times like now. I can't watch or trust the liberal media cause i don't want to shoot my t.v. and waste ammo. Liberal and communist are the same thing by the way for those that did not know that. The liberals even want the use of master bedroom and master bathroom stopped. They say that master is a racist word that was used in slave days. Are you kidding me? Health insurance has gone up and will keep going up thanks to Obamacare and i pray that it is overturned down the road. Obama has screwed this nation so bad i do not think the next president could fix all the problems and massive debt he has gotten us in. Maybe the best thing to do is to default on the national deficit and start over. Land of the cowards and the home of the slaves in the late great U.S.A.
