Warsaw Girls Open Golf Season With Pair Of Wins

Anthony Gadson
Sports Writer

And so it begins.

Warsaw Community High School kicked off its 2009-10 athletic season Wednesday, with the Lady Tigers golf team posting two wins.

Shooting a 174 at Stonehenge Golf Club, Warsaw got the best of East Noble (182) and West Noble (276).

"I'm pretty pleased, but there are some things that could be corrected," Warsaw coach Bob Turner said. "We're going to sit down and correct those. But those are just first-day jitters."

While the scores were good enough to pick up a pair of wins, Turner sees them dropping even more after the 'jitters' wear off.

"The first day of school, I'm pretty nervous too and I've taught 36 years," Turner said. "Anytime it's a 'first,' you're a little bit nervous. When you have people watching you at the tee, it makes a big difference."

Now that they have the first one under their belts, Turner's experienced squad can focus on improving with each match.

Returnees on the team include seniors Audrey Petro and Alyssa Cameron, junior Kayla Hutcherson and sophomore Sarah Hartle from last year's regional-qualifying team. Turner hasn't set the bar low this year.

"We have high expectations," he said. "Our goal is to do better than we did last year in the conference and try to do what we did in the sectional. We just have to take it one day at a time and not live off the good things that happened for us at the end of last season. That was last year, and this is this year."

"We've got four girls that could shoot in the low 40s, and could break 40," he added. "We've got two or three other newcomers, such as Emily Tandy, Devin Hay and Morgan Sands, that could vy for that fifth spot."

In the opening match, it was Cameron and Hutcherson tying for medalist honors, as each shot a 41, followed by Hartle's 44 and Petro's 48.

East Noble was able to keep things close, led by Katie Sharp's 43, but just didn't have enough on Stonehenge's par-36, front nine.

"East Noble is a good team," Turner said. "They have a really good newcomer (Sharp) and they have a good coach. We're going to be playing them again at the East Noble Invitational Saturday, and then hopefully at the regional. Any given day they could beat us, and any given day we could beat them."

Before facing East Noble again Saturday at Noble Hawk Golf Course at 10:30 a.m., Warsaw is scheduled to play in the Huntington Invitational today at LaFontaine Golf Course.
