Residents Reminded Of Leaf Ordinance

Daniel Riordan
Times-Union Staff Writer

Bob Conley took the last part of today's county commissioners meeting to remind residents about a county ordinance involving leaf burning.

"We've had 10 or more instances where people are piling leaves and burning them on or near county roads," said Conley.

The board president then preceded to say that not only was that practice against county ordinances, but it also damages county roads.

Those who violate the ordinance can be fined as much as $300 and be held responsible for any damage caused to county roads.

"It's a problem every year," said County Highway Superintendent Dennis Pletcher.

Commissioner Brad Jackson got approval from the other two commissioners to send out a letter to the OrthoWorx board of directors.

In the letter, Jackson said he encouraged OrthoWorx to work with Kosciusko Community Hospital and also suggested using its grant funds to build an orthopedic hospital.

Commissioner Ron Truex gave an update of what's going on with the Lakeland Regional Sewer District and the possible creation of a countywide sewer district.

"We had a meeting with IDEM yesterday for about an hour and a half," said Truex. "We hope to be in position to have a petition to Lakeland Regional in a couple of months."

Truex has stated on several occasions the establishment of a countywide sewer district would not interfere with the work LRSD is doing.

Pletcher requested to replace a repeater and more radios as they approach a 2013 deadline to have all radios be digital per Federal Communication Commission.

The commissioners also approved a legal advertisement to be placed for the eventual sale of items no longer used by the highway department.

John Castleman, Syracuse Public Library, gave the commissioners brochures about the library's history.

He also asked the county co-sponsor a grant request to improve the energy at the building. The grant is being paid for through federal stimulus funds.

Castleman said the grant is a no-match grant and the county wouldn't have to match any funds.

The board asked for a copy of the grant application so county attorney Mike Miner can make sure there is no liability for the county.

Castleman said with this grant, only one application per county is allowed.

The commissioners signed interlocal agreements for terminal services data for Mentone and Claypool.

A request to vacate a part of Constitution Drive in Turkey Creek Township was approved by the commissioners. The Area Plan Commission gave a unanimous recommendation for it at their Wednesday.
