PIERCETON - Pierceton residents will pay more for garbage pickup in the coming months.
The Pierceton Town Council approved an ordinance to raise the garbage pickup rate from $5.75 to $9 Monday. The rate change could take effect by August.

Council President Jerry Kreger said $9 is what the town pays Sweetheimer Trash Removal for each resident who receives the service. In the past, the town used a trash collection fund to keep the cost down for residents. However, as garbage removal costs went up, the fund was depleted.
Garbage and water utilities are charged on the same bill in Pierceton. Kreger said only the garbage removal portion of the bill will go up.
In January, the council took action to keep water bills flat. The council voted to use economic development income tax money to pay off the town's debt for upgrades made to the town's water system in the 1980s. The bond payoff totaled about $195,000. Town attorney Jim Wallmer said the payoff will save the town money and means the town is debt free with respect to water infrastructure.
Kreger said this is the first time in about eight years the town has raised its garbage pickup rate.
The council also approved the purchase of a new Tool Cat for the street department. The Tool Cat is a multi-purpose vehicle made by Bob Cat. The town will pay about $35,000 for the vehicle, which will be purchased from Bob Cat, Fort Wayne. Kreger said the street department will use the vehicle for street cleaning, snow removal and other tasks.
Street Superintendent Chip Hill said his department has been looking into replacing their backhoe and purchasing a street sweeper. The new vehicle will come with a street sweeper attachment and general-purpose bucket.
