AKRON - Monday night's Tippecanoe Valley School Board meeting started 20 minutes late as school board members were on hand to recognize students from the elementary school to the high school.
Once the meeting started, board members heard about changes to student handbooks for the elementary school, middle school and high school.
Mike Schmidt, assistant principal at the high school, had the most extensive presentation of changes.

Schmidt discussed changes to the handbook concerning the school's computer lab, the search of students' lockers, the tardy and truancy policies and policies about gangs and secret societies among other things.
Schmidt, along with Earl Richter, Tippecanoe Valley Middle School principal, discussed adding language to their handbooks concerning gangs after meeting with the Kosciusko County and Indiana Gang Task Forces.
The building trades fee for homeowners for 2008-09 was approved but not without some discussion about the future of building trades homes.
Board member Hal Hoffman stated he thought it would be a good idea to talk to other schools and see how they execute the program.
The board discussed the pros and cons of either moving to building spec houses or continuing the way they currently build homes in building trades.
The fee for 2008-09 was changed from $3 a square foot to $5.50 a square foot.
The board discussed a tax anticipation warrant for 2008.
Last year, the Tippecanoe Valley School Board applied for a $3.5 million tax warrant.
This year, representatives from Fulton and Kosciusko counties both stated spring tax collections won't be due for some time.
"I'm dissapointed to share that with you," said TVHS Assistant Superintendent Brett Boggs. "But that's the hand we've been dealt."
Before the approval of last month's meeting's minutes, Boggs made a clarification.
"The last student day will be May 29 and the last teacher day will be May 30," said Boggs. "I had previously put both days as the 29th and I just wanted to correct that."
The board also approved a senior trip to Washington, D.C., for the 2008-2009 school year. Students are responsible for the cost of the trip.
Several students were recognized for achievement in the 2007 Fall ISTEP.
Third-graders Meredith Brouyette, Bryston Canada, Madison Conliff, Alyssa Walther and Hannah Brower were recognized while fifth-grader Mila Smalley was recognized.
Brower earned a perfect score on the third-grade language arts portion of the test.
Other students recognized were Tristan Justice, a fifth-grader at Akron Elementary, for winning the David Deuter Memorial Essay Contest; and Brandon Murphy for winning Akron Elementary School's Daughters of the American Revolution American History Essay Contest.
Murphy was also recognized for winning the fifth-grade spelling bee.
The 2007-08 Akron Pride Council was recognized as was the 2007-2008 Akron Hoosier Spell Bowl Team and the 2007-2008 Math Academic Team for Hoosiers.
The board also heard from Julie Canada, president of the Akron parent's support group.
Canada invited the board to the group's spring carnival May 2 at the school.
The carnival starts at 5 p.m. with a barbecue dinner that runs until 7 p.m.
There will be games from 6 to 9 p.m. and an auction begins at 7:30 p.m.
The auction includes tickets to an Indianapolis Colts game.
Canada said the group is currently working on getting sound boards in the elementary school's gym.
