Man Threatens To Kill Others, Then Shoots Self

Daniel Riordan
Times-Union Staff Writer

ETNA GREEN - Details have been released about Sunday night's shooting in Etna Green.

According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, Eric V. Graves, 36, Winona Lake, went to the home of Carl Wireman, 858 N. CR 950W, Etna Green, where he threatened to kill Wireman and his family.

Graves' motives aren't being released by police at this time.

Graves knocked on Wireman's front door Sunday night. When Wireman answered, Graves pointed a handgun at him and told him he was planning to kill him and his family.

According to police, a struggle ensued and Wireman was able to wrestle the gun away from Graves and throw it out into the yard.

At that point, Graves allegedly produced a second handgun.

The two men continued to fight and a shot from the second firearm was fired. No one was struck by that shot.

Wireman was then able to take Graves' second firearm away from him and threw that one aside as well.

At this point, according to police, Wireman retreated back into his residence and told his daughter to call 911. As he was entering the home, Graves pulled a third handgun.

Wireman then locked the door to the home and shut off the lights.

Graves reportedly was still yelling at Wireman as he searched the yard for his weapons.

As KCSD officers approached the residence, Wireman stated he heard a single gunshot.

KCSD deputies arrived to find Graves sitting in a lawn chair at the front of the residence with a gun in his hand and a single gunshot wound to his head.

Wireman, who is a paramedic in Kosciusko County, administered first aid to Graves, essentially saving the life of the man who threatened to kill him, police said.

Graves was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital where he remains in critical condition as of this morning.

No charges have been filed at this time.
