AKRON - All kindergartners in Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. will go full days during the 2008-09 school year.
After hearing from Assistant Superintendent Brett Boggs Monday night that the state is increasing funding, the Valley School Board approved all-day kindergarten for all students.

Currently, Valley has three sections each of kindergarten at Mentone and Akron elementary schools. Two of the sections at each school already are all-day, and one section is half-day kindergarten.
Boggs said for the 2007-08 school year, the state provided about $33.5 million for all-day kindergarten. For the 2008-09 school year, $58.5 million has been appropriated. With the increase in appropriation, Valley will receive anywhere from $721 per student to $2,500 per student. The amount Valley will receive is contingent on the number of kindergartners Valley has. Boggs said if there are 75 kindergartners per school, Valley could receive a total of $180,000 to $375,000 for the 2008-09 school year.
Valley will have to apply for the full-day kindergarten money.
School Board President Mark Wise asked how much more will it cost Valley out of the general fund to pay for full-day kindergarten for all sections, even with the additional state monies. Corporation Treasurer Sherry Adamson said that will depend on the teachers and how much experience they have.
Boggs said most schools don't have full-day kindergarten because of a lack of classroom space.
In other business, the school board:
n Discussed increasing the Builders Trade fee for homeowners for the 2008-09 school year from $3 per square foot to $5.50. Boggs is gathering more information from other school corporations and the school board will discuss the issue at their April board meeting.
n Approved personnel matters as presented, including Jason Arnett as assistant track coach at Tippecanoe Valley High School and David Swanson as technology associate.
n Announced upcoming school board meetings will be April 21, Akron Elementary School; May 12, Mentone Elementary School; June 9, administration office. All meetings are at 7:30 p.m.
School Board members are Wise, Hal Hoffman, Bryan Murphy, David O'Brien and Rod Eaton.
