Hayhurst Seeks 3rd District Congressional Seat

Jennifer Peryam
Times-Union Staff Writer

Tom Hayhurst is seeking the third district congressional seat to foster job creation.

Hayhurst, 67, (D-Fort Wayne) visited the Times-Union recently to discuss why he is seeking the seat.

Hayhurst previously ran for the seat in 2006 when he won the Democratic primary election over the Rev. Kevin Boyd in May 2006. Hayhurst was defeated in 2006 by Mark Souder with a 54-46 percent margin.

Hayhurst first announced he was seeking the seat in August. He said issues that were present in 2006 are there now, and are a lot worse.

Some of the issues that are still present are quality and quantity of jobs in northeast Indiana.

He said he also is concerned about the health care system, and said all Americans need affordable health care. There needs to be a national organized approach to health care, and he said the market will not solve health care for the poor. He suggested there be more free health clinics.

He said he is concerned what government will be like in the future as well as the present. Hayhurst is concerned on America's middle class disappearing, and said it is being pushed down into poverty.

"I'm worried about where the country is heading in regard to jobs and the economy and how it will effect political stability in the U.S.," Hayhurst said.

He said he is concerned with the extreme loss of quality of jobs in northeast Indiana and the U.S.

He said there needs to be a large push for science and math education on a national level for students.

Hayhurst said he believes in fair trade, making sure overseas markets are opened so products can be exported.

He also supports creating green jobs in northeast Indiana, building windmills and solar panels and bringing high-speed passenger rail.

Hayhurst also said a national program needs to be started to rebuild the nation's infrastructure by rebuilding bridges and water and sewage systems.

Hayhurst currently serves as medical director of the Tuberculosis Control Division of the Infectious Disease Center, a part of the Fort Wayne-Allen County Health Department.

He graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington, in 1964.

He completed an Internal Medicine Residency and Pulmonary-Critical Care Fellowship training at Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis, Grady Memorial Hospital/Emory University, Atlanta, Ga., and Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio.

A Vietnam-era veteran, he served as a captain and major in the U.S. Air Force. From 1969-1971, he served as general medical officer on active duty at various military installations across the United States.

Hayhurst served on the Fort Wayne City Council from 1996 to 2008.

He practiced medicine as a pulmonary-critical care specialist at Indiana Medical Associates, Fort Wayne, from 1974 to 2005.

He has served as a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine and is a member of the Board of Arts United, Arthritis Foundation, Indiana High Speed Rail Association and Invent Tomorrow.
