Skillman Speaks At Pete Thorn Awards Dinner

Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman spoke Thursday night about the importance of youth programs.
Skillman was the keynote speaker during the Baker Youth Club/Pete Thorn Awards Dinner at the Lichtenwalter Center. The dinner was attended by 200 city, county and state officials, youth club members and area residents.

Skillman is the first woman to serve as Indiana's lieutenant governor. She served as Lawrence County recorder in 1977, and was elected to the state senate in 1992.
She was the first woman to serve as a majority caucus chair, and now serves as president of the senate.
Skillman said her grandfather and her participation in 4-H at a young age influenced her to become the woman and leader she is today.
"My grandfather had an interest in politics and inspired me to achieve my goals at a young age, and my involvement in 4-H helped me build relationships and be influenced by positive role models," Skillman said.
She stressed the importance of investing time in mentoring children. The Baker Youth Club has made a positive impact on the lives of many young children in Kosciusko County, she said.
She encouraged those who attended the awards banquet to support young children in assisting them in maximizing their potential and teaching them to give back to others.
Also during the dinner, awards were presented.
Zach Stamper, 14, an eighth-grader at Edgewood Middle School, received the boy of the year award.
Miranda Morrison, 8, a second-grader at Akron Elementary School, received the girl of the year award.
The Pete Thorn Award is given by the Warsaw Rotary Club to a man or woman who best exemplifies the qualities and principles of Pete Thorn. Thorn served as the club's director for 37 years and died in 1990.
The principles include dedication to goals, citizenship, concern for youth and excellence in sportsmanship and service.
Stephanie Overbey received the Pete Thorn Award. Overbey is a current Sus Amigos board member and Ivy Tech capital campaign marketing committee member.
Other awards presented were: best attitude award given to Braxton Mimix and Chelsy and Breanna Golday; Helping Hands award given to Alexis Henry and Jordan Mclone.
