Anyone can be an angel and adopt an angel for Christmas.

The Warsaw Salvation Army sponsors Angel Tree to provide holiday gifts for children ages 12 and younger.

This year the Army's community ministries director, Ken Locke, expects a total of 1,000 angels to hang from "tree" branches at Kmart, DePuy, Biomet and Medtronic Sofamor-Danek as well as at the First United Methodist Church in Warsaw and the North Webster Church of God.

The Angel tag gives the Angel's first name, age, gender, sizes and the item(s) they would like or need.

Families may sign up for either Adopt-A-Family at the Combined Community Services office or for Angel Tree with The Salvation Army. These organizations share names so there is no duplication of efforts. Families and children aren't gifted more than once.

Peggy Lisenbee Wright, director of client assistance at CCS, said people can call her to adopt a family. Last week there were still 70 families who needed "adoption" and CCS is still taking applications, too.

Last year, 389 families applied for the program.

Locke said the Salvation Army will take Angel Tree names until Dec. 22.

"I remember when we had 400 kids," Locke said about the Angel Tree list, "and we thought that was a lot."

Presents will be gathered Friday and distributed the week of Dec. 18.
