The 64th Village Post Office in Indiana opened in the Bargain Barn Wednesday.
Customers of the discount store at 1900 E. Winona Ave. will be able to drop off packages and buy stamps and flat-rate boxes during regular business hours. The store is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays until 5 p.m. in May.
The opening was celebrated Wednesday with cake and ceremony, though the Warsaw Post Office already began picking mail up earlier this week, according to Postmaster Kevin Baird.
The office is a good way for the U.S. Postal Service to extend its reach and make its services more convenient for customers, Mary Dando, media liaison from the Indianapolis office, said Wednesday. Unlike VPOs that opened in several smaller towns in the county last year, she added that this doesn’t coincide with a reduction in hours at either the Warsaw or Winona Lake post office.
VPOs opened last year in Mentone, Cromwell, Etna Green and Claypool.
Calling Village Post Offices the “post office of the future,” Dando also noted that Indiana has the single largest share of the approximately 400 VPOs in the country. Village offices also opened this week in  Centerton, La Paz and Shelburn, representing triple the number of VPOs in the state since early last year.
Bargain Barn owner Butch Schapson said he learned about the village office model from a brother who works in the Franklin Post Office. The process took about three to four months, he said.
“I think it’s always great to see this,” Dando said. “We’re very happy to have people like Butch happy to partner with us.”
