SYRACUSE – A Syracuse man was arrested yesterday after allegedly strangling the mother of his children until she became unconscious.
According to an affidavit filed by the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office, the victim advised that on March 12, she and  Ryan V. Smythe, 24, of 12750 N. CR 825E, Syracuse, got into an argument. She reported that as she was sitting on the floor in her childrens’ bedroom, Smythe became angry and threw the childrens’ basketball goal and came over to her and wrapped his hands around her neck, pinning her against the bed until she became unconscious. She stated that when she regained consciousness, the children were jumping on her.
Further, she stated that Smythe took her phone so she could not call anyone.
The victim stated both her children were present at the time of the incident.
A deputy spoke with Smythe, who admitted he got into an argument with the victim and became upset and heated. He stated he punched the door to the childrens’ bedroom and the door hit the basketball goal knocking it over.
According to the report, the deputy did observe redness on the victim’s neck.
Smythe was arrested Wednesday afternoon and preliminarily charged with battery – serious bodily injury, strangulation, domestic battery with a child under 16 present and domestic battery. He was held on a $5,000 bond.
