Editor, Times-Union:
Genocide is something that happens more often than it should. Also, it is something that more people need to understand.
Genocides have happened more often in Latin American countries than we know about. Peru has had more than enough genocides.
In 1780, one genocide broke out. Jose Gabriel Tupac Amaru was the leader of this indigenous uprising in 1780 against the Spanish in Peru. There were an estimated 100,000 people killed. This particular genocide started as a rebellion. Many were killed while protesting oil and mining projects. Authorities declared a military curfew and troops had to patrol towns. Throughout the region, non-Indians were systematically slaughtered. This genocide took place between 1780 and 1782 in a town called Macha in Upper Peru.
Even though Tupac’s goal was unsuccessful, he later became a mythical figure in the Peruvian struggle for independence and indigenous rights movement and an inspiration to myriad causes in Peru.
