MUNCIE – Walter Claris “Doc” Heatherly went to be with The Lord July 2, 2014, at the I.U. Ball Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family and in the expert, compassionate care of the intensive care nurses, respiratory therapist and physicians.
He formerly was married to Charlotte Laverne Patton Pichler for 30 years.
He loved life and his family. One of the things that made him so unique was that he was the seventh son of the seventh son. He was employed at Westinghouse until 1968. He was a carpenter by trade throughout the years and built his family home on Meeker Avenue in Muncie. He owned a used furniture business in North Webster and Pierceton from 1991-2000. In the year 2000, he underwent major surgery, and through his recovery he went back to school to the Muncie Area Career Center where he earned his GED at the age of 62. He was the oldest graduate that year in Delaware County.
He had a good ear for tuning the piano to perfect pitch. He loved telling “tall tales” and entertaining his grandchildren with stories of fictional character “Morty Zepichai.” His hobbies included fishing, hunting, singing Johnny Cash songs and restoring antique player pianos.
He was especially fond of animals.
He is survived by his oldest brother, T.C. “Jack” Heatherly; a sister, Jolene Heatherly Barton; a daughter, Cheryl Lynn Heatherly Riwitis; a son, Walter Scott (and spouse Theresa) Heatherly; granddaughters (The “Six Pack”): Amanda Riwitis Kirby (Laura), Christina Riwitis Skeens (Jason), Angela Riwitis-Greiner, Julia “Kaitie” Heatherly (Trent), Jessica Heatherly and Audrey “Lou” Riwitis; four great-grandsons: Andon Mooneyhan, Michael Eugene Heatherly, Andrew Greiner and Owen Crabbe; three great-granddaughters: Alaina Heatherly, Alyvia Woodruff and Shelby Hanes; and extensive extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins and his cat, a boy named “Sue.”
