MENTONE – Erich E. Lisdat, 85, Bremen, and formerly of Warsaw, died at 12:05 a.m. Aug. 4, 2014, at Signature Health Care of Bremen after being in failing health for several years.
He was born Dec. 15, 1928, in Jurgenrody Ostyr, East Prussia, Germany, to Emil and Lena Gaul Lisdat. On Sept. 6, 1958, at First Baptist Church of Mentone, he married Viola F. Thomas, who preceded him in death June 23, 2008.
He and his wife were farmers raising grain, cattle, hogs and chickens. He also worked for Creighton Bros. in his earlier years.
He and his family escaped East Prussia to Germany during World War II, crossing the frozen East Sea in the middle of the night. He moved to America Dec. 15, 1951. He received his United States citizenship May 15, 1957. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mentone.
Surviving are three sisters-in-law: Kathryn Greenawalt, Nappanee; Donnabelle Thomas, Bourbon; Waneta Thomas, Warsaw; a brother-in-law, Robert L. (and spouse Edna) Thomas, Warsaw; and several nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Walter; and a sister, Waltroud.
Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Bourbon, 10th Road between South Fir and South Gumwood roads, with Pastor Bryan Balasa officiating.
Services are entrusted to King Memorial Home, 101 N. Tucker St., Mentone.
