DeVon “Smitty” Smith, 96, Kosciusko County, died at 6 p.m. March 16, 2014, in Mason’s Health & Rehabilitation, Warsaw.
He was born March 4, 1918, in Mentone, to Melvin Merle and Radie Fawn Jones Smith. In 1939, he married Grace Baugher, who survives. On March 4, 1948, in Warsaw, he married Opal Warstler, who died June 23, 1985.
He was a lifetime resident of Kosciusko County. He was a restaurant owner for 30 years; his restaurants included Candy Cane, Dog & Suds, Cozy Cottage and The Calico Kitchen. He attended Dutchtown Brethren Church, Warsaw.
Surviving are his daughter, Sandy (and spouse Gene) Zartman, Leesburg; a granddaughter, Kimberly Zartman, Warsaw, and two additional grandchildren; granddaughter-in-law, Rose Zartman, Leesburg; a great-granddaughter, Alaina Zink, Winona Lake, and three additional great-grandchildren; and his half-sister, Betty Metzger, South Whitley. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Dianna Wright; a grandson, Tony Zartman, who died in May, 2010; a twin brother, Doyle Smith, who died June 26, 2002; a stepson, David Lee Halterman; stepmother, Hazel P. Smith, who died in 1992; a sister, Violet Smoker; and a half-sister, Florence Jean Snyder.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, with Pastors Jack Worth of Dutchtown Brethren Church and Dennis Bollenbacher, chaplain at Mason’s Health & Rehabilitation, officiating. Burial is in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
