SOUTH WHITLEY — In Three Rivers Conference action Tuesday in South Whitley, the Manchester softball team defeated host Whitko 7-2.
Getting three runs in the opening frame, the Manchester Lady Squires built their lead to 4-0 before Whitko plated two in the bottom of the sixth inning.
However, Manchester added three more insurance runs in the top of the seventh, running away with the TRC-opening victory.
For Manchester, Nina Smith had three hits and four RBIs, while catching for Sydney Jordan, who pitched 5-2/3 innings for the win, striking out six.
Whitko’s Aly Nicodemus was hit with the loss, despite going all seven innings, striking out three, while also recording two RBIs.
Both teams return to TRC play today, as Manchester travels to Class 1A No. 1 North Miami and Whitko is at Southwood.

In a final tuneup before getting the Three Rivers Conference started, the Tippecanoe Valley baseball team defeated the Culver Military Academy 7-4 Tuesday in Culver. Jay Myers got the win for the Vikings, pitching a complete game. At the plate, Luke Helton was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Isaac Shewman finished 2 for 3. The 7-5 Vikings open TRC play today at Northfield.

The host Tippecanoe Valley boys golf team defeated Culver 173-196 Tuesday at the Round Barn Golf Club at Mill Creek in Rochester. Valley’s Bryce Zimpelman and Culver’s Trent Elliott shared medalist honors, as each shot a 39 on the par-36 course. The Vikings return to Mill Creek for Saturday’ Rochester Invitational.

Tuesday in Nappanee
The Warsaw softball team made a late surge, but came up short Tuesday at NorthWood, falling 6-5. Warsaw’s Kalie Keener, Lauren Shaffner and Karly Jones each had two hits, with Shaffner and Jones also posting two RBIs  and a double each. The loss drops Warsaw to 3-7 on the year and 3-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference. Up next for the Lady Tigers is a trip to defending NLC champion Northridge, which sits at 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the NLC, tonight.

The Warsaw girls tennis team dropped its Northern Lakes Conference record to 0-3 following Tuesday’s 5-0 loss at Elkhart Memorial. Warsaw’s closest match came at No. 2 doubles, where Abbi Baum and Athena Schlitt lost in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. The 1-5 Lady Tigers will look to pick up their first NLC victory Thursday at home against fellow 0-3 NLC squad Wawasee.

Having to move some matches to Warsaw’s Racquet Center due to weather Tuesday, the Wawasee girls tennis team lost 5-0 against Northridge. Among the matches that had to be completed in Warsaw after beginning in Syracuse was the No. 1 singles match between Wawasee’s Katy Ashpole and Northridge’s Emily Hughes. After losing the opening set 6-0, Ashpole took the second 6-3, but succumbed 6-3 in the third. The loss drops Wawasee to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the NLC going into Thursday’s conference match at Warsaw.

The Warsaw girls track and field team continued its dominance in the Northern Lakes Conference Tuesday at home, defeating Plymouth (82.5-49.5) and Elkhart Memorial (87-45). Winning nine events, Samantha Alexander won the 200 (28.07) and long jump (16-1.75), while also joining Mariah Harter, Audrey Rich and Ann Harvuot on the first-place 4x100 relay (50.68). The dual wins move Warsaw to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the NLC. The Lady Tigers will be at Saturday’s Kokomo Relays, then wrap up their conference regular season at home against Goshen Tuesday.
