MENTONE – Cub Scout Pack 3782 held its annual Pinewood Derby March 1 at the First Baptist Church in Mentone.
Each elementary school-aged Cub Scout built their derby car from a 7-inch block of pine wood, carving and painting their own design and racing them on an inclined track in a double elimination tournament.
This year’s champion was Wolf Scout Coleman Sulkey and his car “The Bullet.” Coming in a close second in a tie-breaking race was Webelos Scout Blake Taylor and his car ‘The Hurricane.” Third place was claimed by Webelos Scout Blaine Smith and his trusty rocket car. Fourth place was taken by Bear Scout JJ Flinn and is carved Camaro racer.
Notable mentions in the top eight are Porter Rich, Ashton Irwin, Ethan French and Nate Engstrand.
Twenty-one boys showed up at the track to test their self-designed creations, and though only one went to victory lane all had fun.
The wheels are already turning for new faster designs for next year’s race.
