PIERCETON – President John Baughman called the July meeting of Pierceton Senior Citizens Club to order at 6 p.m.
Roll call response was “What was the hottest day in July you can remember?” Two guests and 18 members responded.
Those celebrating July birthdays were John, Asenath and Elaine and they led everyone to dinner. Regina, Bonnie and Donna also celebrated July birthdays but were not present.
John shared two stories. The first was about three sons who became prosperous (that colorful chicken you sent was delicious) and the widow marrying for the fourth time (one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready and four to go) made them laugh long after John was done.
Dean Rhoades, Washington Township trustee, shared information about township government. Washington Township encompasses Pierceton and other areas for a total of 6-by-6-square miles. There are 17 townships in Kosciusko County. Based on the tax levy, $183,000 was returned to Washington Township to fund EMS, cemeteries and township assistance for residents. $63,000 went to the volunteer fire department for fuel, repairs, insurance and equipment. Some examples of how funds are dispersed are: $28,000 to Multi-Township for EMS services; $20,000 for cemetery maintenance; $16,000 for assistance; $7,5000 for Washington Park; and a few hundred dollars for 4-H clubs.
The advisory board for the township approves the budget. Citizens can view the budget at indianagov.com or call Rhoades at 574-594-5283.
The treasurer’s report was read and approved. Two corrections were made to June’s secretary’s report. Donations of a Christmas doll, purple throw, queen size hand-crocheted bedspread and gas cards from Meijer’s were donated by members Regina, Asenath, Lorene and Alice as prizes for a fundraiser during Pierceton Days. A motion to accept those donations and hold the raffle was made and seconded. Tickets will be six for $5.
The Shaskys will be the entertainment for the Aug. 18 meeting. All seniors in Pierceton are invited to attend and enjoy talking with friends, eating a meal and singing along with the Shaskys.
Meals are available each day at the Pierceton Senior Center. Call 574-594-5632 to reserve a meal.
